December 31, 2001 - A petition has gone up demanding that Britney Spears and Destiny's Child 'middle one' Beyonce Knowles be reconsidered in the latest Austin Power's flick, 'Austin Powers In Goldmember'. The petition cites, "Because their fan base is mostly children and teenagers who will not even be allowed to see the movie, and also because the total amount of people who are against Spears and Knowles is much higher than the amount of their fans, we feel that they will be bad for the movie, and drive viewers away from it." December 30, 2001 - Las Vegas Weekly writer Molly Brown gave her thoughts on the year in music and saved her most pointed comments for Britney Spears. Brown blasted, "Britney is not, and never will be, in the same freaking arena as Madonna" adding, "Madonna pretty much did what she did until she got control. And when she got control, control she did--the entire world. Britney, on the other hand, is a Disney-ized, wind- 'em-up, un-popped cherry doll--or so she claims--who collects rubber bands." December 30, 2001 - Conan O'Brien joked during his Friday monologue, "Yahoo! Reports that the person with the most buzz on the web is Britney Spears, who narrowly beat out Osama bin Laden. Britney Spears was one, Osama bin Laden was two. Yeah, and when Osama heard this, he said, 'This is so unfair. I don't lip-sync in my videos.'"

December 29, 2001 - US Weekly reports Britney Spears was spotted taking in a performance of the off-Broadway play 'Wonder of the World' which stars Sarah Jessica Parker.

December 28, 2001 - Entertainment Tonight reports the Michael Jackson and Britney Spears duet of 'The Way You Make Me Feel' will finally be seen as CBS will re-air the '30th Anniversary Celebration' on January 9. Inexplicably, ET tries to say "it was cut before the original airing in November due to time constraints." Yeah right, like CBS would cut that portion out, the true reason was contractual snags with HBO that didn't allow her to be on another special within so many days of her own, and the Jacko special fell within that gap.

December 28, 2001 - Hollywood.com is profiling the London tabloid's take on advance showings of Britney Spears' new film 'Crossroads.' A source told the Daily Star: "There's a lot of enthusiasm for Britney so there's been a lot of emphasis on the film's bad script and bad music. But there's no denying Britney is bad herself." December 27, 2001 - Star magazine's January 1 issue includes a story on Britney being ordered to clean up her act for her new movie and it includes a pair of photos featuring Britney shopping in New York wearing a Black Hills Harley-Davidson shirt and hip-hugging pants with over 2 inches of her g-string undies protruding out the back. They quote Spears in the piece saying, "What's the big deal? Honestly, I walk around my house naked, so I'm not very modest." As for her movie, while the films backers made her reshoot some too-sexy scenes to retain a PG-13 rating, a source said, "Britney will sing, dance and cavort in skimpy clothes, just like her fans expect her to."

December 27, 2001 - Hiponline.com spoke with Britney Spears about her *NSYNC boyfriend Justin Timberlake's influence on her current album 'Britney' where Spears revealed, "Well, he wrote that one song on the record. But as far as the other stuff, he is a busybody himself, so I try not to bother him too much with the stuff that I do. But if I had something to ask him, his opinion, whatever he thinks and whatever his opinion is means a lot to me. I mean, he's everything to me. So I'm always asking him if I have something that's really weighing on my mind, he's always there for me. But other than that, he really didn't have that much input on this record. December 26, 2001 - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Gemma Tarlach gave her thoughts on the year in music and started out by slamming Britney Spears. Said Tarlach, "In pop music, 2001 began - and ended - with Britney's belly button, on Jumbotron display first at the Super Bowl, then in a Pepsi ad and finally on tour around the nation. Apparently, it was the biggest selling point for an artist better known for lip-synching other people's songs than for any innate musical talent." Read more.

December 26, 2001 - Pagesix.com spoke with parents and kids following news of the Britney Spears movie containing sex, rape, underage drinking and teen pregnancy. Rich Mendelson, 17, of Edison, N.J. said matter of factly, "She appeals to a male audience because she's hot. What do you think is going through a teenage boy's mind when she sings ‘I'm a Slave for You'?" As for mothers, Bertha Quevedo of Astoria, Queens said, "I didn't know she had a movie coming out, but now that I know what it's about, I wouldn't let my daughter see it." Read more.

December 24, 2001 -  Worldpop reports Britney Spears' official website has withdrawn a news item claiming that Britney would perform a duet with Sean P Diddy Combs at the upcoming American Music Awards. While they think the removal was a sign the duet was scrapped, don't speak too soon. The more likely reason was it was still in negotiations but more than likely will go thru... after all, they now both have the same management.

December 22, 2001 - Lynne Spears posted an updated on Lynne's Corner on Friday outlining her daughter's plans for the holidays. Lynne said, "It is four days before Christmas and Britney's last show is tonight. She will visit Justin at his home in Memphis. Brit will come home Christmas Eve, and stay home through the rest of the holidays. Bryan will come home for a week also." Lynne confirmed rumors that Britney's relatives had passed away saying "We lost Maw Ruth and Grandmother Lexie within twenty-four hours of each other. Britney came home for the funerals." Read more.

December 22, 2001 - The New York Daily News reports Britney Spears and her Wright Management mate Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs played a game of "ring around the bed" Wednesday night in a Miami Beach club called Bed. The place has several beds about the club's floor and Britney had a mattress next to Puffy's, but spies had a hard time catching a look as both were surrounded by bodyguards.

December 22, 2001 - Jay Leno joked during his Thursday night monologue, "I saw a catalog, it's a catalog for young girls called 'My Twin,' have you heard about this thing? It's a special service, it will create a doll that looks just like you. You know, they match everything -- the hair, the eyes, the skin, the face shape. That's creepy, isn't it? Think they get a lot of strange calls? [ In deep voice ] 'Yeah, my name's Britney Spears, yeah. I want to order a doll that looks just like me, yeah.'"

December 21, 2001 - AOL revealed today that Britney Spears was the most searched for person for the year beating out Nostradamus and Oprah. Britney also had the #3 poll of the year asking 'Where Will Britney Be in Five Years?' with 35% saying she will be Mrs. Timberlake.

December 20, 2001 - Laura Dempsey of Cox News Service spoke with several parents and experts on the influence Britney Spears has on young girls as she grows into womanhood. Pat Hayes, a doctor of psychology who specializes in women's issues said, "Girl, woman - it's a collision of both. It's never just, 'Now I'm a grown-up.' It's a gradual transition. December 20, 2001 - W Magazine spoke with Britney Spears about her thoughts on Mariah Carey's recent mental breakdown where the pop princess said, "I feel really sorry for her, but I don't think it's what she does that has made her feel unhappy. I think sometimes it's something personal. Maybe she takes herself too seriously. A lot of stars believe their own hype and actually think they're some kind of goddess."

December 20, 2001 - Maybe writers for Jay Leno weren't watching the previous night's Craig Kilborn show as Jay joked during his Wednesday monologue, "Britney Spears said this week she will not -- she will not pose naked for an anti-fur ad after it was announced she would. Remember she said she's gonna do it? Now, she's not. Today, a spokesman for PETA said, it's extremely frustrating for Britney to lead the group to believe she was cooperating, and then all of a sudden changed her mind at the last minute. Which [*NSYNC's] Justin Timberlake said, 'Tell me about it.'"

December 20, 2001 - E! Online's Ted Casablanca has a blind item this week that might make readers recall Britney Spears and *NSYNC's Justin Timberlake being robbed of a videotape from a Florida town a few months back. Ted only describes the couple as "nubile, famous folks are celebrated the world over for their undiminished and unscathed love for each other" and refers to them as "young lovers." Read more. December 19, 2001 - Craig Kilborn joked during his Tuesday monologue, "In celebrity news, Britney Spears has now decide not to pose naked for an anti-fur ad. When reached for comment, [*NSYNC's]Justin Timberlake told PETA, now you know how I feel."

December 19, 2001 - Jay Leno joked during his Tuesday night monologue, "Puff Daddy or P. Diddy or Sean Puffy Combs -- whatever. He's going to be opening for Britney Spears on the last couple of concert stops of their tour. Yeah, isn't that something? They're calling it the 'I'll believe you're a virgin if you believe I'm innocent' Tour."

December 18, 2001 - Jay Leno joked during his Monday monologue, "And it looks like Britney Spears wil not be posing naked for that animal rights poster after all. It was reported in the papers last week that she was gonna pose nude for the PETA commercial, and now she says she's not. So if you want to see Britney naked, you're just gonna have to buy a ticket to her show like everybody else."

December 18, 2001 - Launch spoke with O-Town's Ashley Parker Angel about the band's opportunity to tour with Britney Spears prompting him to say,"It was a huge opportunity for us because most of the people there had never seen us perform, you know? And 20,000 people a night...it was incredible. We went up there with just us and our band. It wasn't like Britney's show--it wasn't like pyro and effects and stuff. It was just us, raw, and it was a lot of fun."

December 18, 2001 - Thanks GangstaBarbie. C&A magazine talked with Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen who was asked about her favorite kinds of music. Gisele said, "I love Brazilian music, from Legião Urbana to Caetano Veloso. From Marisa Monte to Elis Regina. Also,I love Prince, he's amazing. It's basically a mix of everything, 80's artists, Brazilian artists. I just don't like *NSYNC,sh** like that. It's crap, and I can't stand someone who steps in a stage to sing 'Hit Me Baby One More Time' for the 10000th time. I like artists who sing and perform their own songs."

December 17, 2001 - Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune spoke with Ozzy Osbourne about his feelings regarding pop music as he revealed, "It's because the media keeps telling the public that Britney Spears and Whitney Houston are in, but I hate it when the industry tells people what they should be listening to." As for his thoughts specifically on Spears, he said, "I quite like Britney Spears for what she does. Not that I ever would buy one of her albums. But I see where she's coming from, and I appreciate the fact that the kids get off on it." Read more.

December 17, 2001 - Craig Seymour of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution was at Saturday night's Britney Spears dance performance at the Philips Arena and gave it decent reviews saying, "Spears was consistently charming and commanding throughout. Yep, she lipsynced. But at this point, folks should just accept some recorded vocals as an inescapable part of the modern concert experience like pyrotechnics, corporate sponsorship and $70 t-shirts." December 17, 2001 - Some of the more visible parents of today's top pop stars are drawing some search engine interest of their own. Topping the Overture.com search queries are Lynn Harless, the often visible mother of *NSYNC's Justin Timberlake who received 108 searches during the month of November. Next up was Britney Spears' mother Lynne Spears who received 106 searches. Joe Simpson, father of Jessica Simpson received 89 searches. Surprisingly, the most vocal parent on the web, Christina Aguilera's mother Shelly Kearns, didn't receive the 25 search limit to even be listed.

December 17, 2001 - Craig Seymour of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports while Britney Spears' latest hit 'Slave 4 U' hasn't done much on the pop charts, it has found a new audience on urban radio. Romana DeBreaux, music director of Atlanta radio station Hot 107.9 admits, "It's a great song, bottom line. The phone lines reflected the fact that it's a great song. It was Top 10 on phone [requests] immediately." Read more.

December 16, 2001 - YM magazine talked with Justin Timberlake in their January issue where the singer admits about his mother, "We're best friends. I've done some stupid things, but there wasn't anything that I couldn't talk to my mom about. She told me, 'You're gonna do dumb things and you're gonna do great things. As long as you learn from them, that's all that matters'" Read more.

December 16, 2001 - The New York Post is asking in today's blind item: "Which pop princess keeps her weight own by taking laxatives? The downside is she sometimes has accidents requiring even more costume changes than normal."

December 16, 2001 - This week's US Weekly has news and photos of Britney Spears' birthday weekend for the singer who turned 20 on December 2. Britney and *NSYNC's Justin Timberlake took a private jet to the Lake Placid Lodge in upstate New York and stayed in a 700 dollar-per-night cabin that had no television but did 'offer' separate beds. They also talk about her strip tease gift from stripper Steven Peters and her New Jersey concert dance performance where O-Town her with "Happy Birthday".

December 15, 2001 - WENN reports Britney Spears was forced to reshoot scenes to her movie Crossroads following negative reaction in test screenings to her wearing too little clothing. An insider at the studio explained, "It is unfair to make judgments from this because it is a work in progress. Changes will be part of the process of making a great Britney movie for release in February (2002). She will sing, dance and cavort in skimpy clothes, just like her fans expect her to."

December 15, 2001 - The Chicago Sun Times reports Britney Spears will take advantage of post Super Bowl pre Mardi Gras week in New Orleans to hold the movie premiere of her first flick 'Crossroads'. A group of specially selected Spears fans will be her guests for the red-carpet premiere and post-party. As for her next film, look for Britney in 'American Girl', with some scenes shot in Britain. The film is about New York girl with a fabulous singing voice who heads to London to find a long-lost father. 

December 14, 2001 - Craig Kilborn joked during his Thursday monologue about the what we now know is a false story about Britney Spears getting nude for the PETA anti-fur campaign and threw in a shot at her *NSYNC boyfriend. Kilborn joked, "When boyfriend Justin Timberlake asked whether it would make him jealous. He said jealous? Why would I be jealous? I'm g---... yeah, I'm really, really jealous. Spokesman for Britney says fake fur is the perfect accessory for fake singing, fake breasts and fake virginity."

December 14, 2001 - Reuters reports the widely circulated reports that Britney Spears would pose nude for PETA was denied by both PETA's Dan Mathews and the publicist for Britney Spears, Lisa Kasteler. Lisa said, "Notwithstanding the meaningful work that PETA does, we cannot be involved with an organization that would distort the truth," so even the clothed ad appears in jeopardy. December 14, 2001 - Sean P. Diddy Combs will be the opening act for the last two dates of Britney Spears' 'Britney 2001' tour: December 19 in Miami and December 21 in Washington, D.C. With Puffy's Bad Boy label in trouble at Arista, Comb's "new relationship" with Britney's manager Johnny Wright has people buzzing.

December 14, 2001 - The Sun reports several stars such as Britney Spears, Atomic Kitten's Liz McLarnon and Natasha Hamilton, and Rachel Stevens from S Club 7 have taken to the latest fashion craze by wearing sheepsking coats made famous in the UK by BBC football commentator John Motson. December 14, 2001 - The New York Post's Cindy Adams reports Britney Spears had her stretch limo towed from the Bellagio during her video shoot at the hotel for the Billboard Music Awards dance performance. Apparently the limo was waiting in a no-parking, no-standing, no-idling, no-waiting, no-good zone. 

December 13, 2001 - Britney Spears sent out her first Official International Fan Club Newsletter to fans addressing her thoughts on the terror attacks of September 11 and how she's coped with the tragedy. Read more.

December 12, 2001 - The New York Post reports Britney Spears has agreed to pose for a PETA poster and "bare her bodacious bod" for an animal-rights layout due out by Christmas. PETA spokesman Dan Matthews said after writing Britney about her use of animals at the MTV Awards they got a letter from Spears. "A few weeks after we wrote her, we were sent a letter saying Britney had abandoned using animals on tour," he said. Read more.

December 12, 2001 -  Craig Kilborn joked during his In The News segment of his Monday show about Madonna swearing at the Turner Prize Awards broadcast on BBC. Kilborn joked, "Wow. Hey, Madonna, did you kiss the entire NBA with that mouth? I just want to know." As for Britney Spears, he added, "In a related story, Britney Spears cursed after failing to grasp the meaning of Five Dogs Playing Poker.

December 12, 2001 - Hits Daily Double shows Britney Spears' latest effort 'Britney' receiving a 10% jump in sales for the week as she climbs back up 2 to the #4 spot behind heavyweight Creed and the always popular NOW series and the NOW Xmas special compilation. Other pop acts in the charts are Enrique slipping to #12, Shakira holding at #15 and Backstreet Boys' Hits outpacing *NSYNC's Celebrity. Michael Jackson's Invincible continued to show vincibility, dropping to #27, just ahead of the Madonna GHV2 album. Mariah's Greatest Hits album on Columbia debuted so low it may fall of some observer's radars clocking in at a pathetic #44 with 64,000 sales.

December 12, 2001 - The Sun reports Pink has revealed a desire to sleep with Justin Timberlake more than any other boy-band member. Pink also joked about Britney Spears supposedly not having sex with her *NSYNC boyfriend saying, "I live with Justin but he doesn’t bend me over every night. No way."

December 12, 2001 - Scott Flander of the Philadelphia Daily News was outside of the First Union Center last night in Philadelphia to talk with fans at Monday night's Britney Spears' dance performance. The reporter says there were mostly lookalike teenage girls but few guys except ones with their girlfriends or looking to pick up on the girls that went. Flander also says, "There did not seem to be any black people at the concert, though it is possible there were a few." Read more.

December 11, 2001 - Topping tonight's Drudge Report, "RAUNCHY BRITNEY TOLD: COVER UP: Hollywood chiefs have ordered pop princess Britney Spears to re-shoot sizzling scenes in her debut film - because she showed off too much flesh... Developing..."

December 11, 2001 - Echoing thoughts of most every female Britney Spears hater on the planet, Catherine Lucey of the Philadelphia Daily News lashed out at Britney saying, "The clothes say it all too. This popstress is all about sex. The clothes, the pelvic-thrusting dances and the not-too-coy, overproduced songs all scream orgasm in an oh-God-don't-ever-stop kind of way." December 10, 2001 - Philadelphia Inquirer music critic Dan DeLuca critiqued Britney Spears' latest album 'Britney' sounding disappointed over her not taking any chances. Dan said, "With legions of teenage fans following, it would be thrilling to watch her dive headlong into adulthood by taking some real risks." As for risks, DeLuca did credit *NSYNC in their latest effort saying, "Celebrity represented significant progress because, unlike Britney, it dared to take chances. Hiring electronica guru Brian Transeau to produce Timberlake's 'Pop' and mining British underground dance music on JC Chasez's 'Up Against the Wall' were gutsy moves." Read more.

December 8, 2001 -  Jay Leno joked during his Friday monologue, "There were reports in the tabloids that on her 20th birthday party Britney Spears got a wild lap dance from a male stripper. She said the stripper took off all his clothes and then teased her for 20 minutes and, boy, Britney was furious. She said, 'Hey, that's my act.' She was very upset. Very upset."

December 8, 2001 - Francis Bok, 22, who was a slave for 10 years in Sudan, has written Britney Spears to ask her to consider the political implications of her lyrics. Bok wrote, "I know you don't mean any harm. You probably just didn't know that millions of people, many of them our age, are enslaved around the world. You've got the voice, please use it to educate your fans about slavery and urge them to become abolitionists." Read more.

December 8, 2001 - Spin Magazine spoke with the guys from the Gorillaz who gave their thoughts on Britney Spears' I'm a Slave 4 U track where Squirrel said, "This is the first Britney Spears song that doesn't sound like a ride at Disneyland. All her others-seriously-it's like you're walking by the mechanical bears and they're singing Britney Spears songs." Shifty added, "This is the best Britney song ever." Squirrel agreed. 

December 7, 2001 - Phil Kloer of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution focused on the sexually charged image of Britney Spears ahead of her show in Atlanta on Saturday. Speaking with Joe Kelly, executive director of Dads and Daughters, an educational and advocacy group, who asks, "What does it tell men and boys to have Bob Dole sitting in that Pepsi commercial? December 7, 2001 - The Sun reports pop idol judge Simon Cowell is blasting female pop stars saying of Britney Spears, "I hated her last single. She's falling into the trap of misunderstanding why she was sexy." Cowell also called Emma Bunton "totally and utterly forgettable" and Victoria Beckham's album was "total rubbish."

December 7, 2001 - WENN reports Britney Spears is tired of all the talk about her sexy outfits saying, "I think the body's a beautiful thing, and to dance; there's nothing wrong with dancing and jutting your hips back and forth. Ricky Martin does it, everyone does it. I think it's really funny that they scrutinize me when I do it."

December 7, 2001 - The guy that stripped for Britney Spears on her 20th birthday the other night called into the Howard Stern Show this morning. December 7, 2001 - Spin magazine talked with Gorillaz about various bands and songs in the January issue including *NSYNC and Pop. Jamie Hewlett groaned, "I thought boy bands had died out. They're so sh**. Are Justin Timberlake and Britney shagging each other? Is there going to be a live broadcast fo their first sexual encounter together?" Nakamura added, "I don't know who's in *NSYNC except for Justin Timberland [sic]. Let's just say they're no O-Town." Hewlett added of the song's beat-box, "The sound effects are like somebody is on the toilet."

December 6, 2001 - India.Arie emailed fans today and addressed controversy about her recent ads for GAP telling fans the company sees her as "an interesting looking black girl" and added of her Vogue appearance, "To look at Vogue and see Britney Spears on the front cover and my strong African self on the back is a candle in the darkness." December 6, 2001 - New York Newsday has 8 photos of Tuesday's Britney Spears concert at Madison Square Garden and also talked with fans about the show. Online's Ted Casablanca reports on the Britney Spears photo shoot for the singer's Elvis poster where the singer was "so hell-bent on grinding her booty for the camera, Elvis-style, that the photographer actually had to ask Britney to stop." December 5, 2001 - The Enquirer has more details on the Britney Spears night of drinking with boyfriend Justin Timberlake of *NSYNC at C2K, which prompted the Las Vegas Liquor Commission to cite the bar for serving the underaged couple and pals. A witness told the Enquirer, "Britney looked like she was feeling no pain and, at one point, got very loud and started shouting: 'This is Las Vegas, let's party.' Then waitresses offered the group more drinks. Her party started slamming down shots of Jagermeister so fast the waitresses couldn't keep up with them. December 5, 2001 - Jennifer D'Angelo of Foxnews.com reports stars like Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears have inspired, if accidently, a new fashion statement of showing your butt crack. Annette Stamatelatos, one of Britney Spears' backup singers commented, "We're all flying out of our pants — Britney, me, the dancers. It's sexy at the pre-point before the pop-out. December 4, 2001 - The New York Post reports Britney Spears was treated to a birthday strip show from a hunky male stripper - right in front of her parents and 10-year-old sister, Jamie Lynn. Britney also talked with boyfriend Justin Timberlake on the cell phone while at the Solaia club while she opened his gifts, which included beautiful Baccarat crystal glasses, a baby-blue teddy bear and some silver candelabras. December 3, 2001 - Britney Spears won a My VH1 Award on Sunday night in the category of Navel Academy (Best Bellybutton Appearance). As for Christina, she and Mya, Pink, and Lil' Kim took home awards for Is It Hot in Here or Is It Just My Video? and My Favorite Video. Neither were actually at the event.

December 3, 2001 - MTV talked with Pink about lyrics in "Don't Let Me Get Me" which includes the verse, "Tired of being compared/ To damn Britney Spears/ She's so pretty/ That just ain't me." Pink said, "I've met Britney. She's really, really sweet. She's probably the sweetest girl I've ever met in my life. But every interview I would sit down, or just anywhere, really, and they'd be like, 'Well, how do you compare yourself to Britney and Jessica and Christina?' And I'm just thinking to myself that [they're asking this] just because we're the same age, or girls, young white girls singing pop music or whatever we do. But we're all different. Moran talks of Britney's breakout success of Baby One More Time but talked about the challenge she faced when Christina Aguilera emerged from the pop scene. December 2, 2001 - Britney Spears' mother Lynne posted an update on her daughter's official site about what they've been up to. They managed to get home on Thanksgiving and Britney went 4-wheeling with her sister the same day they got stuffed on turkey.
