a new crop of stars like we've been having over the last couple of years.
Whether it was Fred Durst (of Limp Bizkit) or Kid Rock or Britney Spears

great songs out right now, but we went from superstars to a group of potential
superstars." Read more.

Insuring Miss Spears a long and fruitful career... And may I borrow this
tape for further examination?" As for *NSYNC, he cracked, "Ah, yes *NSYNC.
Ohh, all you uniquely different, but uniformly bland, making each appealing

bite, they croon, swagger and cash huge checks."

4 U', producer Rodney Jerkins hopes to continue that with a remix of her
latest single, 'Overprotected'. Jerkins said, "They needed a remix that's
crazy. I kinda had fun with it 'cause I took it old-school. It's an old-school-type
rhythm, which I think is kinda cool because it's an element she never had,
but I still gave it her edge. I was up all night rocking that joint. [It
has the] same lyrics, I just reproduced the track." Read more.

work."

compared to Miss Janet's pyro-gyro-technics." Meanwhile, Roeper gave his
thoughts on Spears' new movie 'Crossroads' as well. Read more.
February 20, 2002 - Anonymous
writes "I was searching around for news about Britney and I came across
this: My friend's Dad works for Paramount Pictures and he accidently leaked
a little bit of news concerning Britney when I was over there. I mentioned
that I was a huge fan and he let some news about a new Britney movie slip.
She's going to be in a movie called "Ray of Light" all about Madonna's
teen years and rise to fame! And Britney's gonna play Madonna!!! How cool
is that?!? He said that Madonna helped to write the screenplay and specifically
asked for Brit to be the lead actress!!! This is gonna be so cool! I saw
Crossroads and Britney's a GREAT actress! I'll try to get more info from
my friend's Dad for ya!!!! Note: Well let's file this in the highly
questionable gossip category for now..."

Craig Kilborn joked on his Monday night monologue, "I went to see the new
Britney Spears movie last night. And you know, to me you had the bad acting,
bad singing, you had no plot, just a shameless vehicle to show off Britney's

of Cox News Service gave his take from the Britney Spears press conference
where she addressed the film's moment where her character Lucy loses her
virginity. Britney explained, "She loves him. I'm not saying I would do
something like that. But that's real. That's something that happens every
day. It would be silly for somebody or parents to say, 'No, no that doesn't
happen,' because it does. That's human nature. When you're young and you
fall in love with somebody, that's something that happens even truly.''

Pearlman of the Chicago Sun Times spoke with 'Crossroads' co-star Kim Cattrall

to get the calls for movies. Honestly, it was a quick job and Britney was

to write that scene in, but it got cut. We flashed, like, when we were
at the hotel celebrating, you know?" ...Yeah, like totally Taryn! Read

February 16, 2002 - Those
sick of hearing about Britney Spears this week hopefully didn't watch Total
Request Live, as the ENTIRE show was dedicated to the singer. The countdown
was all Britney, the interviews were all Britney. You all most have to
pity Incubus for showing up Friday to be completely overshadowed by the
Britney love-fest.
February 16, 2002 - People
magazine reviewed Britney Spears' effort in 'Crossroads' and concluded,
"First seen in bra, panties and socks enthusiastically lip-synching to
Madonna's 'Open Your Heart,' Spears doesn't embarrass herself here, but
she's rarely more than pleasantly bland." Read more.
February 16, 2002 - Mike
Walker of the National Enquirer was on the Howard Stern Show Friday morning
and played the Gossip Game with guest Ananda Lewis. The fake item for this
week's competition was: "Britney Spears liked the black light effects in
her latest music video so much that she had one installed in her bedroom.
She then surprised her boyfriend Justin Timberlake when she turned out
the lights in her bedroom and had him open his eyes to see some strategically
placed hearts covering her private parts but lit up by the black light."
Artie Lang was the only person to get the answer correct.
February 16, 2002 - Liz Braun
of the Toronto Sun reviewed Britney Spears' new movie 'Crossroads' and
while she said Spears did "a perfectly adequate job" Braun called the film

long advertisement with very bad dialogue, and not nearly as interesting
as Spears' new Pepsi commercial." Read more.
February 16, 2002 - Todd
McCarthy of Daily Variety reviewed the debut film effort from Britney Spears,
'Crossroads', giving it a poor review as has been the prevailing though
so far on the film. Todd said, "Tamra Davis' direction evinces no sense
of style, but rather smacks of "coverage" cut together in almost random
fashion. Performances are utterly routine, with Spears coming off as blandly
appealing at best but exhibiting no special luminosity under admittedly
adverse circumstances." Read more.
February 16, 2002 - Todd
R. Ramlow of Popmatters.com reviewed the 'Crossroads' as well as the audience
that he watched the film with. Of the crowd, Ramlow said, "From five to
50 (and these were adults on their own, not escorting their children),
boys and girls, black, white, Asian, and Latino, straight and gay, they
all were there." As for the film, he adds, "Sure, Crossroads and Brit herself
may be silly, superficial, and bubbly, but so what? She and the film are
also fun, sexy, and playful, and if Britney or pop music makes someone,
anyone, maybe even you, even for a moment, it can't be all bad." Read more.
February 16, 2002 - Dave
Karger from Entertainment Weekly gave his opinion on who will end up atop
the weekend box office figures and gives 'Crossroads' a good chance at
finishing #1 with $16 million ahead of the Denzel Washington starring 'John
Q' and the Bruce Willis starring 'Hart's War'. Karger said, "With a PG-13
rating, several musical numbers, and some bordering-on-racy plot points,
this will be the movie to see this weekend for any teen female. If Mandy
Moore could rustle up $12 million for her flick ''A Walk to Remember,''
surely Britney [Spears] can amass $17 million over four days to top the
charts." Read more.
February 16, 2002 - Top Britney
Spears fan site World of Britney reported today that after receiving a
bandwidth overage bill of $2,000 for last month, the site's webmaster (Ruben)

Edelstein of Slate reviewed Britney Spears' film debut 'Crossroads' and

schizoid marketing calculations." Read more.
February 16, 2002 - Lynn
Barker of TeenHollywood.com gave her thoughts on 'Crossroads' and whether
the Britney Spears acting vehicle is as bad as Mariah Carey's 'Glitter'
was. Barker said, "No. It's a much more simple story and the music is actually
logically woven into the plot. Britney won't win any acting awards but
this is her first try and she's charming enough for us to root for." Barker
gave the film 3 out of 5 stars concluding, "If you are a young, rabid Britney
fan, you'll love the film. If you are older and think Britney is hot, you'll
see her in at least a couple of skimpy outfits. If you can't stand her,
you wouldn't be going anyway. 'Crossroads' is surprisingly...okay." Read
more.
February 16, 2002 - Moira
Macdonald of the Seattle Times weighed in on the Britney Spears starring
'Crossroads' giving it only 1 star. Macdonald said that even the 13 year
old she brought along told her, "It's so cheesy it's funny." As for her
thoughts, Moira said, "What you don't have is a reason to sit through this
snoozefest, unless the idea of seeing Britney in a towel is somehow thrilling,
or you need an example of shamelessly bad screenwriting, laden with coincidence
and cliché and empty characterizations." Read more.
February 16, 2002 - Another
negative review of 'Crossroads' from Susan Stark of the Detroit News who
says, "None of that matters much, though. It's Spears' glowing presence
(and emergence from pretty-in-pink ingenue to full Britney-esque, belly-baring
chic) that counts for everything in a film that clearly means to preach
exclusively to the converted." Read more.
February 16, 2002 - Thor
Christensen of the Dallas Morning News ripped into Britney Spears today
as while Britney Spears claimed recently "I love to talk to people. I'm
a very open person." Thor responded, "The store may be open, but the shelves
are mostly bare. She responds to each question during a 25-minute interview
with a short, pleasant quote that suggests either she has no opinions,
or she doesn't see the point in sharing them with you." Read more.
February 16, 2002 - Chris
Hewitt of Knight Ridder Newspapers reviewed the Britney Spears starring
'Crossroads' giving the flick a 'C' rating, but wasn't quick to point any
blame on Spears herself. Hewitt explained, "Spears will get dumped on for
'Crossroads,' but that's not fair. She demonstrates some range, and plenty
of actor/singers, including Elvis, Barbra Streisand and Lance Bass." Read
more.
February 16, 2002 - Gemma
Tarlich of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel gave her thoughts on the Britney
Spears starring 'Crossoads' and railed on it's heavy promotion of Pepsi
and the singer's previous album. Tarlich said, "Like Spears' music, the
movie is too sexually charged for preteens - and like 'A Mother's Gift,'
the bomb of a book she co-penned in 2001, too simplistic for the rest of
us. Lacking substance and soul, 'Crossroads' comes up shorter than Britney's
cutoffs." Read more.
February 16, 2002 - Stephne
Holden of the New York Times took a few shots below the belt when reviewing
Britney Spears in 'Crossroads.' Holden noted the singer's spaced eyes saying,
"Her open face with its crinkly smile and big brown eyes spaced several
miles apart holds the camera reasonably well." Meanwhile, he desribes the
singer saying, "It's a little eerie how machinelike Spears often appears.
Although she is obviously a human being, her looks, singing, dancing and
acting all suggest a computerized composite of some people's ideal of the
post-teen-age all-American girl." For his film review, click here.
February 16, 2002 - Michael
H. Kleinschrodt of The Times-Picayune profiled Britney Spears ahead of
the hometown girl's 'Crossroads' release. Britney revealed it may be awhile
before she releases a follow-up album to 'Britney'. Spears said, "Music
will always be a huge part of who I am, but it might be a while before
I make another album." As for her plans, Britney revealed, "In the future,
I'd like to go to college to take two or three courses. It's something
that I want to do for me, just so I can have that experience." Read more.
February 16, 2002 - Michael
H. Kleinschrodt of The Times-Picayune also gave his thoughts on the Britney
Spears 'Crossroads' release giving the film a generous 2 1/2 stars. Kleinschrodt
said, "'Crossroads' might be cinematic junk food, but isn't that precisely
what you crave sometimes? With Spears' legions of fans as a ready-made
audience, it is certain to be an extremely popular date movie for teens.
Girls will root for the characters and eat up the soap opera crises. Their
boyfriends will sit back and enjoy the scenery." Read more.
February 16, 2002 - Elisa
Bongiovanni of the Contra Costa Times gave her thoughts on Britney Spears
and admitted, "I've always liked Britney, you see, but up until recently,
I was ashamed of it. That is, until I realized I wasn't alone." Bongiovanni
explained, "I enjoy her music for the same reason I enjoy Jerry Bruckheimer
flicks -- it's mindless entertainment. You know as an 'adult' you are supposed
to hate it, or her in this case, but you can't help but be secretly entertained."

February 16, 2002 - Lawrence
Toppman of The Charlotte Observer gave Britney Spears two out of four stars
who gave mixed reviews of Britney's performance. Toppman said, "Spears
projects few emotions convincingly, which doesn't help. She often looks
quizzical, like a dog that's forgotten where she buried a bone; she'll
handle a big crying scene well, then seem unable to focus on what's happening
around her." But she wasn't the worst on the lineup saying it was, "Dan
Aykroyd, whose immobility approaches that of Mount McKinley." Read more.

is a very spiritual person and it helps that he comes from the same background
I do. He's very ambitious and motivated and he loves life and he makes
it fun for me. Ten years from now, I can see myself being married and having
kids." Read more.

girls to travel on the fame freeway." Read the entire review here.

February 15, 2002 - Phil
Rosenthal of the Chicago Sun Times ripped into Britney Spears for constantly
being on television the last few weeks ahead of the release of Crossroads.
Phil said, "Arrrgh! Is anybody else sick of seeing Britney Spears every
time they turn on the set these days? Every five freaking minutes, she's
in an ad for Pepsi or Herbal Essence shampoo or this 'Crossroads' movie.
Or she's supplying the same much-rehearsed answers on talk shows like this
or some pseudo-newscast to the same stupid questions about acting, her
outfits, whether she considers herself a role model and her relationship

to listen to her lip-sync another bland jingle. Is there anything less
appetizing than a flavor of the month a few years later, when it's gone
rancid and stale?" Ouch...
