September 30, 2003 - Lloyd Grove of The New York Daily News reports Britney Spears and her married dancer Columbus Short dined at 92 after the lunch crush yesterday and shared a semi-romantic meal in a corner banquette. The pair seemed very much a couple, but weren't kissing or displaying any other public affections, other than Short eating food off of Spears' plate as she talked on her cell phone. At one point, another patron approached for an autograph, and Britney gladly signed, though her hulking bodyguard promptly appeared to tell the staff not to let anybody else near their table. Locke insists the track is just a joke, and they don't hate Spears. "First of all, I think that song's developed a heavier tone than we first intended," he explained. "As a band, we're way more offended by pop-punk or nu-metal--the kind of stuff that affects our age group. To me, Britney Spears plays, like, children's music, and if some 11-year-old girl really gets a lot of joy out of listening to Britney's songs, then who am I to rob her of that? September 30, 2003 - The New York Post reports Dan Klores resigned as publicist for Britney Spears after the singer put several of his relationships with other clients in peril. "Dan had made a deal for Britney with [NBC head] Jeff Zucker for her to go on NBC," a source revealed. "She canceled it and went to ABC. Then Britney was supposed to be on the Esquire cover exclusively - and she appeared on three other magazines' covers. [Esquire editor] David Granger was furious. It was crazy." September 26, 2003 - MTV News caught up with Britney Spears and asked the singer about her recent magazine photo layouts that have seen her shed most of her clothing. "As far as photo shoots go, W, Rolling Stone, whatever, the pictures are really sexy, but actually, when I did the photo shoots, I was sometimes in ball gowns and nice dresses, and of course they used the pictures where I'm half nude," Spears explained. September 24, 2003 - The New York Daily News is providing new details on the embrace Britney Spears was photographed in with a dancer who they identify as Columbus Short, a 21-year-old who's wife is pregnant with their first child. A spokeswoman for Spears said, "Britney and Columbus Short are friends. He is one of her dancers and is helping choreograph some numbers for her." As she was leaving the Pier 59 event, a spy revealed that "her bodyguards formed a phalanx around her and shoved everyone in front of her out of the way. It was like she was the president or something. Rob Gregory was shoved aside along with everyone else."

September 24, 2003 - Newsweek reports industry watchers are predicting that Britney Spears' forthcoming album, which the singer has described as "very moody," could fare far worse on the charts than both 2000’s 'Oops! I Did It Again,' which sold 9.1 million copies, and her 2001 follow-up, 'Britney,' which sold less than half that. "Maybe her newness has worn out," said Greg Mize, spokesman for Handleman Co., which distributes music to more than 2,700 Wal-Mart and Kmart stores. "I suppose it depends on how you measure success. September 14, 2003 - Femail.co.uk reports that Britney Spears admitted in an interview for this week's edition of Top Of The Pops Saturday she was a little embarrassed knowing her mother Lynne had seen her kissing Madonna at the MTV Video Music Awards. "It was a little awkward - my Mom saw me kissing a girl, oh my God," she said. But Spears added "If it was any other girl I think she'd really have something to say. He writes, "Now that Britney's turned 21, she's legally become America's official symbol of slutty sex appeal. Not only did the NFL plaster her image everywhere to kick off their season, but ABC's 'Monday Night Football' is now mingling saucy video clips of her mouthing lame, nasal vocals into the show's generic glitzy opening. September 14, 2003 - The Mirror reports Channel 4's Popworld host Simon Amstell left Britney Spears in a huff after asking the singer in an interview if she took diet pills, calling her a nutter as well. "She just didn't get him at all. Simon was interviewing her in his usual pisstake manner but when he told her he thought she was a nutter and asked if she took diet pills the interview was cut short. September 12, 2003 - It is now two weeks later, and searches for the Britney Spears-Madonna kiss from the MTV Video Music Awards see no sign of dropping off the pop culture radar. September 12, 2003 - Jeannette Walls of MSNBC.com reports that since their much talked about kiss at the MTV Video Music Awards, Madonna has been turning Britney Spears on to Kabbalah. "Madonna seems to be the high priestess of proselytizing for the Bergs and the Kaballah Centre," said Rick Ross, an expert on cults and alternative religions who has been an outspoken critic of the Kabbalah Centre. September 11, 2003 - A source within Britney Spears' camp is telling the New York Post that rival Christina Aguilera has been settling for jobs Spears has turned down. "Christina just does all of Britney's sloppy seconds," quipped the source. "Britney turned down Donatella [Versace]... because she didn't want to be associated with just one brand. Next thing you know, Christina is the face of Versace. Then Britney and Skechers part ways and Christina is signed by them. Everything she does is something Britney has passed on."

September 11, 2003 - Jay Leno joked during his Tonight Show monologue on Wednesday night, "A lot of people now surfing the web trying to find those pictures of Madonna kissing Britney Spears. They say this is like the passing of the torch from one generation of pop stars to another. See, girls can do that. You know what I'm saying? Men can't -- men can't do that. September 11, 2003 - Us Weekly caught up with Britney Spears' little sister Jamie Lynn at a party for Teen Vogue's Young Hollywood edition and asked her what she thought of her sister Brit's girl-on-girl smooch with Madonna at the MTV Video Music Awards. "I promise you, my sister is so totally into boys," said Jamie Lynn. "I'm not mad ... I think it's cool!"

September 11, 2003 - Britney Spears' mother Lynne posted a new update on her daughter's official website on Tuesday. She writes, "Jamie Lynn and I are going home for a visit next week. Britney won't be coming with us because there's so much work to do with dance rehearsals and the new album. Bryan and Lauren have been with us in California for the past week. Lauren is working with the Pepsi Smash show and Bryan is out here for meetings." September 11, 2003 -  A spy at the September 3 press conference for the NFL Kickoff Concert in Washington, D.C. told Us Weekly that Britney Spears refused to pose for pictures because she was concerned about a huge hickey on her neck. "Justin has made it crystal clear that they aren't welcome," the insider said. "And because he personally chooses the dancers and actresses who appear, it's got to the point where the casting directors know not to bother auditioning blondes." September 9, 2003 - MTV News reports that before blasting Britney Spears during Limp Bizkit's concert at London's Finsbury Park, frontman Fred Durst also spoke with reporters beforehand on the collaboration with the singer that went bad. "Her label had called me and said Britney's trying to be shocking and different and daring," he said of the pairing during a press conference before the show. September 9, 2003 - Britain's NEW magazine reports Cameron Diaz felt betrayed by her former lover Jared Leto's alleged romance with Britney Spears. But *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake was unaffected by the news, convinced his ex used Leto to get back at him. "Cameron was heartbroken when she found out Jared was dating Britney," a source revealed. "It upset her so much she broke down in tears. She couldn't help feeling betrayed by Jared even though they were no longer a couple. Justin just laughed the whole thing off. He thinks Britney is just trying to get back at him."

September 9, 2003 - MTV News caught up with Britney Spears and asked her whether 'Me Against the Music', the new song she debuted at Thursday on ABC's NFL Kickoff Live, was going to be her first single. "I can't tell you what the first single is going to be," Spears said, "but there are some surprises that are going to come up in the song that I'm really excited about." September 8, 2003 - The Daily Star reports Christina Aguilera confronted Britney Spears at a Hollywood nightclub and accused the singer of moving in on her image after the pair shared a same-sex kiss with Madonna at the MTV Video Music Awards in an attempt to boost record sales. "Christina was pretty furious that she'd unwittingly helped to vamp-up Britney's career," an assistant for Spears said. "They had some pretty strong words in the club and there was some bad blood. Luckily, Britney managed to calm Christina down and explained that it was good for her as well. Christina eventually realized that and was even talked into doing it again next year."

September 7, 2003 - Mary Huhn of the New York Post blasted Britney Spears' performance for the NFL Kickoff Live event on Thursday. Huhn writes, "Sure, she wants to distance herself from *NSYNC's Justin Timberlake, her ex-beau, but to be completely out of sync is going too far. September 7, 2003 - Christina Aguilera fans are furious after the media has focused only on the kiss between Madonna and Britney Spears at last weeks' MTV Video Music Awards, while ignoring their hero's kiss with the Material Girl. A petition on the subject states: "MTV was so concerned with getting Britney’s ex-boyfriend’s reaction on television because they want to start more gossip when they don’t realize that their relationship is over! People hardly even noticed that Christina Aguilera and Madonna kissed because MTV only showed the very end of it on TV. Everybody is talking about Britney and Madonna kissing and the two of them are getting so much publicity on entertainment news shows as well as radio shows, while Christina gets barely any because nobody had the chance to see it. There is also another downside to MTV’s editing for Christina. One of the things this performance was supposed to do was end the bogus feud between Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera that the media has dragged out since the two of them came onto the scene. When Christina enters the stage, you can clearly see her blow Britney a kiss right before she starts singing. Another thing MTV decided to cut out of the show was at the end of the performance when Britney blew a kiss back to Christina. It is not fair that MTV cut these two key points for Christina out of the performance. Every year MTV edits their award shows to show the highlights the live cameras may not have put on the air. September 7, 2003 - Howard Stern said on his radio show this morning that he watched the NFL pre-game show last night on ABC, which featured a performance by Britney Spears. Howard and the guys spent a short time talking about how she does the same hit songs every time she does stuff like that. At one point she has her pants pulled off by a couple of other dancers and her panties almost came off. Artie Lang said that was the only time his head came off his pillow during the game. Howard said he didn't think she looked all that good in the panties either. He said he'd still bang her though. Artie and Howard talked about how she really likes to be a little whore when she performs. Howard also brought up Aerosmith and how they look like two different bands. He said Steve and Joe still look pretty good for their age but the rest of the guys don't. Howard said he thinks they must be approaching 60 or so. Fred guessed that they're about 57 or 58. Gary came in and said they're only 53 or so though. Howard said he loves the band and made Britney Spears look like a jerk when they performed some ''real'' music.

September 7, 2003 - Before the Britney Spears concert at the National Mall during Thursday's 'NFL Kickoff Live 2003', a bodyguard for the singer took offense at The Washington Post's Reilly Capps when he began interviewing Spears's tobacco-chewing, 73-year-old grandfather, June A. Spears. Beefy security man Maurice Eldridge grabbed Capps's notebook and shredded three pages of notes. Dan Klores, who managed Spears' appearance, told the Post afterwards, "The bodyguard's action was the height of stupidity." Read more. 

September 7, 2003 - The Fredricksburg Time interviewd Elsie Belman, Britney Spears' limo driver this week in Washington DC. Belman revealed, "I had [Spears'] grandfather in the front seat, and she was very respectful of him. Whenever he said anything, she said, 'Yes sir.'" September 4, 2003 - The Neptunes/N.E.R.D. star Pharrell Williams has a short diary in the October issue of Teen People where he talked about working on Paulina Rubio's new album, but he's apparently done working with another pop singer. "I'm not one to sling mud, but I heard that Britney Spears said she won't work with the Neptunes again on her new CD," Pharrell explained. "That's probably her nice way of being pissed because we didn't do anything with her yet. But it's cool. We did our thing on her last album and now she's a huge star. My job there is done."

September 4, 2003 - Britney Spears has found herself in the 'Crossfire' of the posters at the Democratic Underground forum after her she proclaimed on the CNN program that "we should trust our president" in an interview with Tucker Carlson. dembones remarked, "See, here is the deal ya little hussy. The shrub fans think you are a slut, and aren't going to bye your albums. The aloof think you are over, and the rest of us, think you suck.. Have a nice non-career." MoonAndSun added, "I bet Madonna regrets 'The Kiss' now," referring to the Material Girl's outspokeness against Bush. September 4, 2003 - Britney Spears was on CNN's 'Crossfire' where she spoke with conservative co-host Tucker Carlson and issued her support for pResident Bush. September 4, 2003 - Britney Spears topped the Lycos 50 following her kiss with Madonna at last week's MTV Video Music Awards, while Madonna herself catapulted to the #10 spot. Christina Aguilera managed to jump seven spots to #15, but didn't seem to create the spark of her pop rival Spears. September 4, 2003 - Jay Leno joked during his Tonight Show monologue on Wednesday night, "Hey, how many think Madonna kissing Britney Spears on the MTV Awards last week was just a cheap publicity stunt? You think that? See, I don't know. I don't know. I mean, Madonna seemed to enjoy the kiss. As we all know, she's not a good enough actress to fool anybody. So I think it might have been real."

September 3, 2003 -  USA Today's Edna Gundersen chatted with readers in an online chat on Tuesday and was asked about the kiss between Britney Spears and Madonna, and the non-reaction from Britney's ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake of *NSYNC. "Priceless indeed," she agreed of the response. "I thought it was a bit unfair and tacky of MTV to zoom in on Timberlake's response, particularly since I suspect most people in that room were exhibiting similar responses. September 3, 2003 - Extra spoke with Us Weekly's Ken Baker about the steamy on-stage kiss between Britney Spears and Madonna. Baker says, "They have been long-time admirers and, in the weeks leading up to the VMAs, they became very close friends." The magazine also added that Jennifer Lopez was asked to perform in Madonna and Britney's kiss off, but Jennifer blocked the idea because she didn't want to wear a wedding dress so close to her actual wedding date with Ben Affleck, opening the door for backup Christina Aguilera. September 3, 2003 - The Sun reports Britney Spears was spotted at a Brighton shop called Pussy where she snapped up a handful of badges, including one with the words 'Wine Me Dine Me 69 Me'. Shop owner Nicky Harper said, "Britney just wandered in and bought a handful of badges."

September 3, 2003 - Peaches has told RollingStone.com how Britney Spears asked her to do some songwriting for her next record, but the queen of electro-punk passed on the offer that many would have killed for. "I thought, 'What can I write for her that they're not gonna water down?'" she explained. But when Pink solicited the singer last month to contribute an intro rap to a song called 'Oh My God' on her next record, Peaches jumped at the chance. "She said, 'This needs you on it!'" Harrison writes, "Witnessing Madonna, Britney and Christina -- whom I will henceforth refer to as Mabritguilera -- playing tongue-tag was like watching any one of the three make out with herself. September 3, 2003 - Randi Cardia, who lives in Manhattan and has two teenage daughters, described to the New York Times a majority of the clothes offered for them as "hooker wear." She fumed, "There are a lot of us out there that are just appalled that someone hasn't taken a stand." The "stand" she refers to is a stand against what she called "disgusting role models" like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. "It's normal now to see these 12-year-old or younger girls trying to be Britney and Christina, with their pierced bellybuttons, their tiny little tube tops, their strappy shoes and their shorts" showing the tops of their buttocks, said Cardia, who, discouraged by the current run of back-to-school offerings, shops with her daughter at stores that cater to boys. Now, how old is Madonna, like, 46? What are they, like, 20, 21? Doesn't Megan's Law apply here? Isn't there some kind of Amber Alert when middle-aged people start making out with -- am I wrong? In fact, Britney said the worst part about kissing Madonna was for two days she could still taste the Polygrip."

September 3, 2003 - Globe magazine reports Britney Spears recently suffered a flat tire in her VW Bug on La Brea Avenue in Hollywood. The singer was driving alone at the time and couldn't change the tire herself, so she called for roadside assitance from AAA. While she was waiting, a busload of foreign tourists happened to be driving by and couldn't resist stopping. Friendly Spears ended up signing around 60 autographs and posed for photos for fans before AAA arrived.

September 2, 2003 - The New York Daily News reports Nicole Kidman seemed a little miffed when Guy Oseary diverted some attention to Britney Spears at his MTV Video Music Awards after-party. "She came in and was sitting with Guy on the couch," revealed a nosey guest. "They sat and talked for about 20 minutes. Then Britney came and sat on a couch next to them. Guy went to talk to Britney for awhile. All of a sudden, Nicole gets up and puts her coat on to leave. You could see she got jealous because Guy left her to talk to Britney. September 2, 2003 - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution apologized to readers Monday for using a picture of Britney Spears kissing Madonna on its front page Friday. The picture, not much bigger than a postage stamp, was near the top of Friday's front page. September 2, 2003 - Amy Lee of Evanescence was on 104 FM in Washington DC with Haber and Erin and weighed in on today's crop of pop divas. "There are so many of these stupid pop divas that are really going down lately," Lee said. "They're going down, they really are. It's not the big thing anymore. Like Britney Spears and all that, they don't threaten me, they don't bother me because they're not talented... But Christina Aguilera, for example, is really talented. I think she has an amazing voice. I listened to that 'Stripped' CD, and I think the songs and her vocals are amazing. And I am so pissed off at her for being the 'Queen Filthy McNasty' because she doesn't have to be. She could totally be like Aretha Franklin or something. She could rely on that talent and do great. She's that talented so I think she could be really successful without completely making it like a porn star." Online reports Britney Spears recently hopped out of her Escalade and scurried into Border's book store with her bodyguard steps behind on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. Dressed in a peasant blouse and ass-strutting chinos, Spears came out just a bit later with a pile of hardbacks.

September 1, 2003 - Metal-Sludge.com did a 20 questions segment with ex-Megadeth Guitarist Marty Friedman and asked him if he preferred Britney Spears or Jewel. The rocker responded, "I've said this on national radio and I'll say it again. Everybody please take note: Any guy who doesn't like Britney is gay. Period. No exceptions. Jewel gets some points for shooting a video while going to the bathroom, but Britney still wins hands down!" Then, when asked about whether he was concerned his new album was going to be released on Steve Vai's label Favored Nations, which is home to Steve and David Lee Roth, who the site reports pissed into a fan and the piss blew back onto them, Friedman responded, "I am happy to hear that he has a healthy sense of humor. September 1, 2003 - The Sunday People reports Britney Spears exercised in the streets of Santa Monica after munching on a salad at a trendy open-air restaurant. The singer was dressed in a strappy black vest and fuchsia jogging pants, and touched her toes, stretched her shoulders and even opened her mouth wide to stretch her neck and jaw. Read more.

September 1, 2003 - The Daily Star reports that Britney Spears was the brains behind the MTV Video Music Awards kiss between herself and Madonna, as well as the Material Girl and her pop rival Christina Aguilera. Spears suggested the saucy stunt to boost their careers, and Madonna and Aguilera instantly agreed. "We realized that Britney has been trying to sex-up her image recently, but this was out of this world," remarked an MTV insider. "She took the girls to one side at rehearsals and put the idea forward. The other two were more than happy to take part because they knew how much attention it would get - and thought it would be a good laugh. But it was a major departure for Britney because she had this girl next door tag. But she wants to show she's more of a woman than a girl - and she's certainly showed them that!"
