Louis Verdad, who designed the MTV Video Music Awards outfits for Britney

think I'll ever do it again.
Q: Why?
A: She's just not the kind

A lot don't. I prefer substance."

October 29, 2003 - Spin magazine
reviewed Britney Spears' latest album 'In The Zone', giving it a B-. They
write, "'In The Zone's' first single, 'Me Against The Music,' is a fine
specimen of Britney 4.0--fast paced danced anthem, all grinding percussion
shutting through a traffic jam of synths. Most of the record's up-tempo
bangers trace the single's footsteps, bopping raucously without slipping
into chintzy faux rock or flavorless hip-hop. Gone are the spare Neptunes
beats of Britney, replaced by a hectic sonic pileup." Read more.

Madonna's latter-day direction. In the Zone is by no means Britney's Ray
of Light. Instead, Spears' fourth album jumps stylistically all over the
place, from techno to hip-hop, even to reggae, with thumping, tribal dance
songs being the predominant flavor, save for a touching ballad or two.

Reimer of the Baltimore Sun weighed in on Kendel Ehrlich's recent troubles
after saying she'd like to "shoot Britney Spears", only to announce she
was pregnant days later. Reimer reminded Ehrlich that her 4-year-old son
will soon be dealing with a "bevy of half-naked beauties that will be sitting
next to Drew in class, starting in about seventh grade." She added, "Has
the first lady seen Christina Aguilera lately? If Ehrlich is looking for
somebody to shoot, she makes a better target. Christina makes Britney seem
like a Sunday school teacher." But all is not lost. "Unlike pop stars,
parents have staying power (because we have no choice), and we can outlast
the latest," Reimer explained. "When my children were young, I was terrified
of Madonna's spell. But she was making bad movies by the time they noticed
her. Now she is writing children's books, for heaven's sake." Read more.

reportedly decided against pressing charges. Security also grabbed a point-and-shoot

October 18, 2003 - Jenny
Colgan of The Scotsman says she's "a bit worried about Britney Spears."
Why? "The problem is that Britney is now so unbelievably famous, she’s
Liza Minnelli," Colgan explained. "She’s going to be famous for her entire
life, whatever she does. If she hides away there’ll be 'depressive recluse
Britney'. If she keeps on making music, she will fail - it looks like this
album is going to be a stinker. If she gets married the tabloids will hound
her till it finishes. Her acting career is going nowhere - 'Crossroads'
was only saved from winning all the awards for worst movie of the year
by the other pop tarts, Madonna in Swept Away, Mariah Carey in Glitter
and J-Lo in Gigli - and the horrible book she 'wrote' with her mum, 'A
Mother’s Gift', didn’t really give Swan by Naomi Campbell a run for its
money at Waterstone’s. In fact, her only hope of redemption is to go through
a 'drugs and drink hell', prostrate herself completely, do lots of confessionals,
find God again, then attempt the sympathetic resurrection. It’s a high-risk
strategy." Read more.

Britney Spears both beat me out. You know, I froze in the audition, I forgot

with Columbia, and I hear -- when I was 17, and I hear that Britney signed
with Jive, you know, the week before, and Christina signed with RCA the
week after, and it like came back around, and then the media has always
kept it. So it's been like this ongoing thing for me, to try to differentiate
myself and try to separate myself, and I try to do that with my image and
I try to do that, you know, through love and through the kind of music
that I sing, and hopefully, people can just get over the comparisons. Even

says the governor's wife made an "inadvertent figure of speech" last Friday
when she spoke about shooting singer Britney Spears. "As a working mother
raising a 4-year-old son, the first lady has concerns about the negative
influences that the entertainment industry can have on young children and
teenagers," said Ehrlich's spokeswoman Meghann Siwinski in a statement
on Tuesday. "During a public appearance, she inadvertently used a figure
of speech to express those concerns." Read more.

Spears walked in with Columbus Short (yes, I knew who he was) and some
girl I didnt recognize. At first they were all calm, ordering their drinks
(two venti fraps[caramel and vanilla creme] and a grande hot chocolate),
but as they were waiting for the orders to come up, they started horsing
around. Columbus apparently grabbed the hat Britney was wearing and was
tossing it around. I was trying to pay attention to my customer, but of
course, I was watching Britney and her friends. Britney started laughing
and trying to grab it, calling him names but not in a serious way. When
he wouldnt give it back, she started pouting. The words that really stuck
in my head was when she said 'Babe, give it to me.' She kept calling him
'Babe' and 'Sweetie'... but I dont know if it was lovey-dovey like because
she didnt seem too genuine, just seemed like she was trying to get her
hat. I did notice that when they were leaving, he finally gave her the
hat back and she slapped his butt--I am guessing in a friendly way."

asked to sex up her own image, Lee said, "Nobody ever tells me what to
wear on stage, and I doubt anybody tells them what to wear. They just feel
they have to do that. It's a big tragedy. It doesn't offend me. It's just
tragic. It's really sad. It's not necessary. Because if you're a talented
musician, you should just work just like everybody else does. Just do your
music and put it out there and don't do anything you don't feel you have
to do. You don't have to do anything. You don't even have to be here. Go
do something else. it's your dream to be a dancer or a singer, whatever,
if you're a pop star I don't know how that works. Do what you want to do.
Don't feel like you have to sell sex just to get people to listen to you.
I feel like Britney Spears may have to do that in order to get people to
listen to her music because I don't think she's talented. But Christina
Aguilera, on the other hand, is very talented. I think that's the real
tragedy." Check out the entire interview here.
