December 29, 2003 - Jon Pareles,
Neil Strauss, Ben Ratliff and Kelefa Sanneh of the New York Times listened
to a lot of bad pop music in 2003 and took part in a conversational column
about the subject. One item brough up was Madonna's "complete misfire"
with 'American Life' and her kiss with Britney Spears at the MTV Video
Music Awards. Strauss said, "What's amazing about that to me is that something
that's totally rehearsed and scripted gets so much attention. It wasn't
like they actually kissed out of passion." Sanneh added, "Well, yeah, it
was staged. It was a live music video in a sense. And so in that sense
it was a totally appropriate moment for the Video Music Awards." Read more.

December 25, 2003 - Britney
Spears is on the cover of the new issue of Blender magazine, where she
stepped up her response to pop rival Christina Aguilera who earlier had
commented that Spears was "like a lost little girl who needs guidance."
Spears responded, "That's funny, because I haven't seen her in two years,
and then she comes up to me in a club in front of all these people and
tries to put her tongue down my throat! I'm like, 'How are you?' I say,
'It's good to see you,' and she goes, 'Well, you're not being real with
me.' I was like, 'Well Christina. What's your definition of being real?
Going up to girls and kissing them after you haven't seen them for two
years?' A lost girl? I think it's probably the other way around." Spears
added, "When somebody's been rude to you so many times, it's like, 'You
know what, Christina? I'm really not about the fake bullsh** anymore. You're
scary and I feel really dark when I get around you, so I need to be over
here now'." Check out the scans here.
December 25, 2003 - Larry
Flick of Metroline reports that gays have connected to Britney Spears'
evolution from a teen renegade into a provocative young woman on her fourth
album, 'In The Zone'. She also displays the kind of larger-than-life persona
that queer listeners require from their divas. "The funny thing, though,
is that I never think in terms of being a diva," Spears said. "I just think
about doing good work, having a good time, and making music that people
can respond to. If that leads people into seeing me as a diva, well, I
guess that’s cool... as long as it’s a diva in a positive sense and not
in a negative or bitchy way." Read more.

on Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, Britney Spears, and Paris Hilton. "Britney
Spears is someone who is extremely well-managed -- the people who are handling
her career have done an incredibly good job of putting her out there and
pulling her back,” said Bill Stankey of Westport Entertainment, a celebrity
consulting firm. New York Post movie critic Lou Lumenick says, "It’s a
real science. There are people who make a very good living advising stars
how to do this, but a lot of them just can’t resist the limelight. They
don’t have the willpower to resist the cameras and the red carpet -- they’re
drawn to it like moths to a flame. And Ben and Jen are the worst abusers."

Spears. "Right and I’m not into Britney," Ford said. "She is cool, but
I’m not into her flavor. We art totally different artists. She doesn’t
create music or a self-proclaimed vocalist. Christina is a singer and writer,
but I can pick up an instrument and play it. That is no mystery to people
and I have studied classical opera for four years. I just happen to have

Destiny's Child star Beyonce Knowles, and Pink. "I'll say this much: Christina
is the most naturally gifted singer of the three," the music critic said.
"Not always crazy about her material, or her style, but the girl has a
powerful and very musical voice. As for Britney... I think she would have
been better off had she not been dragged into show business as a kid, and
allowed to forge a more normal life. But perhaps I'll get into that in
a future article." Read the entire transcript here.

there is that Christina haters think she sleeps around and dresses badly,

Britney Spears. Britney haters say that she has an awful voice and no respect

the question about whether he, or his 13-year old daughter, Christine,
or friend Kasha Boisvert, 13, were happy with their 200-section seats with

Out magazine spoke with Lizzie Grubman about the criticism her former client
Britney Spears has received for creating an image for herself that is more
about the body than the voice. "I worked with her in 1999 when she had
her first album out," Grubman explained. "I worked with her for about two
years. But now she's growing up. There's nothing wrong with what she's
doing. She was just a kid back then and now she's an adult. That's what
she's doing, she's being an adult. She's a lot different now from when
I first met her when she was 17 years old." Asked if she would advise her
to change her titillating image if she was still representing the pop tart,
Grubman said, "You know what, I think we have to look at her as a girl

dancer circled the scantily clad, white singer, slowly ogling her up and
down. He then blindfolded Spears from behind and proceeded to make gyrating
motions behind her as she feigned unwillingness. The performance, which

December 15, 2003 -
During an online chat with Ken Barnes of USA Today, a reader in Buffalo,
New York provided the following scenario: "I'm Britney Spears. On paper
I'm worth $100 million+. So I decide to take a break. Like 3 years. During
that time I spend most of the first year taking singing and acting lessons
from the best in the business as well as some songwriting classes. The
second year (hopefully once the paparazzi has forgotten about me) I do
some travelling around the world. Then in the third year I get to work
on a new album and hook up with good directors like Spike Jones and Sophia
Coppola so I can finally have a good video. My comeback single would be
something unexpected, like a remake of Tori Amos's 'Crucify'. After all
I have nothing to lose, I'm worth over $100 million. Do you think this
would've worked, or is the current method (me chasing my tail) the better
alternative?" Barnes responded, "It's not so much a question of whether
it would have worked as a situation that's completely inconceivable for
Britney to have come up with or considered if somebody offered the idea
to her. Don't think there's a lot of depth there. Madonna would have been
capable of such a move, but Britney, despite all the comparisons, ain't
Madonna." Read more.

December 10, 2003 - Darryl
Morden of the Hollywood Reporter reviewed the KIIS FM Jingle Ball concert
the other night, praising Jessica Simpson while sneering at the performance
of the show's headliner, Britney Spears. Morden writes, "Spears' three-song
closing set was completely anticlimactic -- cold, detached and perfunctory.
And although she wore a headset mic, it didn't even appear as if she was
singing most of the time, her voice bolstered by multitracks in the background
as she ran through the same old synchro-choreography and Sodom & Gomorrah
writhing from past years with her coed troupe of dancers." As for Simpson,
he remarked, "Who'd have thought the most artistry would come from Jessica
Simpson? The maybe-Gracie Allen of the 21st century, with faux Farrah Fawcett
'70s hair, turned in an acoustic set accompanied by just two guitar players
and a percussionist, her vocals reined for some actual subtlety." Read
