December 29, 2003 - Jon Pareles, Neil Strauss, Ben Ratliff and Kelefa Sanneh of the New York Times listened to a lot of bad pop music in 2003 and took part in a conversational column about the subject. One item brough up was Madonna's "complete misfire" with 'American Life' and her kiss with Britney Spears at the MTV Video Music Awards. Strauss said, "What's amazing about that to me is that something that's totally rehearsed and scripted gets so much attention. It wasn't like they actually kissed out of passion." Sanneh added, "Well, yeah, it was staged. It was a live music video in a sense. And so in that sense it was a totally appropriate moment for the Video Music Awards." Read more.

December 29, 2003 - In a petition addressed to Jive Records, fans of Britney Spears are encouraging the singer and the label to show "her critics that she can, in fact, sing live, and, should sing live on her forthcoming World Tour, which starts in March." December 29, 2003 - After a series of unauthorized books on *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake have been published, Ratethemusic.com reports that the singer is set to write his own autobiography. Timberlake has promised to detail his famous romance and break-up with Britney Spears.

December 25, 2003 - Britney Spears is on the cover of the new issue of Blender magazine, where she stepped up her response to pop rival Christina Aguilera who earlier had commented that Spears was "like a lost little girl who needs guidance." Spears responded, "That's funny, because I haven't seen her in two years, and then she comes up to me in a club in front of all these people and tries to put her tongue down my throat! I'm like, 'How are you?' I say, 'It's good to see you,' and she goes, 'Well, you're not being real with me.' I was like, 'Well Christina. What's your definition of being real? Going up to girls and kissing them after you haven't seen them for two years?' A lost girl? I think it's probably the other way around." Spears added, "When somebody's been rude to you so many times, it's like, 'You know what, Christina? I'm really not about the fake bullsh** anymore. December 25, 2003 - Larry Flick of Metroline reports that gays have connected to Britney Spears' evolution from a teen renegade into a provocative young woman on her fourth album, 'In The Zone'. She also displays the kind of larger-than-life persona that queer listeners require from their divas. "The funny thing, though, is that I never think in terms of being a diva," Spears said. "I just think about doing good work, having a good time, and making music that people can respond to. December 22, 2003 - In an online chat with readers, Elysa Gardner of USA Today was asked to weigh in on Christina Aguilera's negative remarks on pop rivals Britney Spears, Destiny's Child star Beyonce Knowles, and Pink. December 22, 2003 - The Broadcaster reports that after having camped outside the Verizon Wireless Arena box office in sub-zero wind chill conditions for up to 36 hours, some of Britney Spear's biggest fans went home steaming about being sold less-than-ideal seats for Spears' 'In the Zone Tour' appearance in Manchester, New Hampshire in April. "To be waiting out here since 5 a.m. and not even get tickets on the floor?" said Mike Couture of Bedford, after first responding to the question about whether he, or his 13-year old daughter, Christine, or friend Kasha Boisvert, 13, were happy with their 200-section seats with a rhetorical, "would-you-be-happy?" look of disgust. The kids cable channel is close to greenlighting a 13-episode order for the series Jamie Lynn Spears, who already serves as a cast member on the Nick sketch comedy show 'All That'. December 22, 2003 - Steppin' Out magazine spoke with Lizzie Grubman about the criticism her former client Britney Spears has received for creating an image for herself that is more about the body than the voice. "I worked with her in 1999 when she had her first album out," Grubman explained. "I worked with her for about two years. But now she's growing up. There's nothing wrong with what she's doing. She was just a kid back then and now she's an adult. That's what she's doing, she's being an adult. She's a lot different now from when I first met her when she was 17 years old." Asked if she would advise her to change her titillating image if she was still representing the pop tart, Grubman said, "You know what, I think we have to look at her as a girl who's just growing up."

December 22, 2003 - News satire website Deadbrain.com reports that with tears welling up in her eyes, Britney Spears explained her relieve in learning Saddam Hussein had been captured. "Not many people know this about me, but I'm a huge freak when it comes to politics," Britney revealed. December 15, 2003 - Cameron Adams of The Herald Sun reviewed Christina Aguilera's sold-out show at Rod Laver Arena on Thursday night (December 11). Adams praised Aguilera while slamming Britney Spears in the review saying, "There's no miming, no complaining about trying to sing and dance at the same time and no baulking from the high notes." Adams added, "It's now almost ridiculous to think Aguilera was seen as the poor man's Britney, especially when Aguilera breaks into a spine-tingling cover version of Etta James' 'At Last'. So I decide to take a break. Like 3 years. During that time I spend most of the first year taking singing and acting lessons from the best in the business as well as some songwriting classes. The second year (hopefully once the paparazzi has forgotten about me) I do some travelling around the world. My comeback single would be something unexpected, like a remake of Tori Amos's 'Crucify'. After all I have nothing to lose, I'm worth over $100 million. December 15, 2003 - Britney Spears' 73-year-old grandfather June A. Spears tells Globe magazine that he can't remember her granddaughter's performance the day after seeing it. "Britney took me to her concert and the next day, I had no memory of it," he said. "I only know I went because she reminds me." June added, "It's rough. And the docs say there isn't anything they can do. The funny thing is that I can remember what I did 30 years ago." June's memory loss is also taking a toll on Britney. "She's shed a lot of tears over this," a pal revealed. "Britney told me, 'It's the worst thing ever, worse than the breakup with [Justin Timberlake] and Even worse than my parents' divorce'.
