March 31, 2004 - Howard Cohen of the Miami Herald was on hand for Britney Spears' concert at Miami's AmericanAirlines Arena Sunday night for her Onyx Hotel Tour. Cohen writes, "The garish show was dubbed Onyx Hotel for some unfathomable reason but had no theme to speak of unless Spears shimmying on luggage carts while being pushed by topless bellboy dancers contains some hidden meaning. Musically it was a bust, too. Cocktail lounge restructurings of her early bubblegum pop hits like '...Baby One More Time' and 'Oops!... I Did It Again' were ill-conceived, done in by discordant arrangements and Spears' shocking lack of vocal ability. If anything, her breathy and nasal voice is becoming weaker, rather than stronger, as her career progresses." March 31, 2004 - A report has been making the rounds that Britney Spears had signed a multi-year endorsement deal with Budweiser, but it was made up by a poster at BritneySpearsForum.com. The man quoted in the article, Dave Burwick, who the phoney item says was Budweiser's North America's vp-marketing for carbonated alcoholic beverages, is actually Chief Marketing Officer and Senior VP for Pepsi-Cola North America. March 31, 2004 - Satirical website The Spoof reports astronomers who spotted a near-earth object approximately 220,000 miles from our planet have calculated the speed and trajectory of the object in relation to orbit speed. They have concluded that the large asteroid will impact directly on the San Diego Sports Arena, on the same night Britney Spears will be performing. At NASA, scientists were, at worst, indifferent, and some were even a bit giddy. Read more.

March 31, 2004 - WESH NewsChannel 2 was on hand for Britney Spears' Onyx Hotel Tour stop in Orlando at the T.D. Waterhouse Center on Monday night (March 29). Most people they spoke with said they loved the show, even though many parents thought parts of it were not appropriate for younger fans. March 31, 2004 - The New York Post reports Britney Spears' entourage demanded payment for the singer to show up Sunday night after her Miami concert aired on Showtime. A club manager said a South Beach party promoter named Evans called and asked for $2,000 to take her to Mynt after the televised performance. "We would have been happy to have Britney at the club Sunday evening, and we would have arranged a table and bottle service for her and her guests," said the Mynt manager. March 31, 2004 - justlovesnsync writes "I was on the floor last night at the Orlando show of Britney Spears show. Joey Fatone of *NSYNC slipped in during one of the opening acts while the lights were down. He was looking real cute wearing a black beanie and black t-shirt. He appeared to enjoy the entire show. He slipped out during Britney's last song. No one really noticed him during the entire concert, of which that really surprised me!" 

March 31, 2004 - On his radio show this morning, Howard Stern brought up Britney Spears and how she's doing concerts for Clear Channel, his arch nemesis after they dumped his show from their stations. Howard complained the Britney is cursing and using the S-word during her concert where kids are watching. He said he doesn't have a problem with cursing but people are worried about their kids all the time and they're letting their kids see that stuff. Stern then played a couple of clips from Britney's show and talked about how bad she really is. Howard was told that she only sang on about 3 or 4 songs and lip-synced to the rest of them. Britney has also started changing around her hit songs making them unrecognizable. He played a couple of examples of that and they're horrible. The guys then talked about how unlistenable the songs were.

March 31, 2004 - Phillip Swann of TVPredictions.com checked out Britney Spears' Showtime concert in HDTV, and found the pop princess should stick to music videos after seeing a singer who "looked like she hadn't slept in days." Swann says Britney's face was "bumpy and puffy, making her appear five to ten years older than her years." Swann added, "Interestingly, Showtime featured very few close-ups of Spears' face, opting mostly to display long shots of the singer shaking her booty during long dance numbers. For the voters of FHM, that may sound like a good decision. However, to make matters worse, it appears that Spears has put on a few pounds, particularly in her legs. Although still charming and appealing, she doesn't possess the physical sizzle in HDTV that she exhibits in her music videos such as 'Toxic'." Read more.

But can he resist the charms of his longtime lover Britney? "She's almost 10 years older than him and wants to settle down in a steady relationship," a source close to Timberlake revealed. March 29, 2004 - The guys from Blue took part in a politically incorrect game of slap 'em or snog 'em with BBC's 'Top of the Pops'. Amongst the ladies put to the test with the boy band were former Spice Girls Victoria Beckham and Emma Bunton, Kelly Osbourne, Pink, Britney Spears, Liberty X star Michelle Heaton, former S Club singer Rachel Stevens, Christina Aguilera, Kylie Minogue, and Jennifer Lopez. March 29, 2004 - The Daily Star reports Britney Spears pleaded with promoters to touch up promotional photos for her world tour -- complaining she looked too fat. The singer's personal trainer Bobby Strom said, "I've told her to cut out barbecue sauces and gravies, and eat more protein -- especially on tour. She also needs complex carbs such as brown rice, veggies and wholegrain breads." And a source added that Britney admitted, "I look like a blimp, so do something about it. March 29, 2004 - The National Enquirer spoke with Columbus Short's estranged wife Brandi who blasted Britney Spears for stealing her husband just as she's about to give birth to their child. "Britney was infatuated with my husband from the moment she met him," 24-year-old Brandi revealed. "He told her that they couldn't have a relationship because he was married and had a baby on the way. But she didn't want to hear it because she had fallen for him very hard. He said that when they were alone, Britney would say, 'Do you want to kiss me?'" In an ironic twist, Britney dumped Short after she found a used condom wrapper in his bedroom while the two were on a European promotional tour last year. Brandi added, "He was a fool. March 29, 2004 - News of the World spoke with 21-year-old Tom Witchey who says Britney Spears chatted him up on a blind date—and then took him to her room at the Four Seasons Biltmore Hotel in Santa Barbara. "I followed her back into her bedroom. She was in a see-through tank top and pyjama bottoms. We started kissing and our clothes just came off at the same time," Witchey revealed. "I was taken aback by how spontaneous she was. She was definitely in charge but it worked out for both of us. I like to pleasure a girl and she definitely wanted that. But the sex wasn't anything kinky—no craziness. Just very slow and gentle in the beginning but, once it heated up, it got more intense." No doubt because Spears didn't make herself available to interviews, the preview turned into a less than kind editorial. Cutler writes, "Usually, when a major star does a show for television, that star grants interviews to promote it. Spears had agreed to an interview, but canceled without explanation. She later agreed to release the transcript of an interview with Showtime. Her managers then changed their minds. Finally, her people offered to have Spears answer 10 questions, but only via e-mail. Even if this is how life works on Planet Britney, it isn't for Earth's journalists -- she blew it again by not responding. March 25, 2004 - NW magazine profiled Britney Spears' recent troubles that prompted her to seek therapy, a move applauded by rival pop singer Kelly Osbourne. "Good for her," Osbourne said. "Therapy was the best thing to ever happen to my brother [Jack]. I commend her!" As for Britney reading the book about Prozac in public, clinical psychologist Dr. Judy Kuriansky thinks Spears was making a cry for help. "It's heavy duty," Kuriansky said. March 25, 2004 - Star magazine reports Britney Spears' 55-hour hubby Jason Alexander is trying to squeeze as much money as possible from the singer even after he agreed to sign annulment papers. An insider claimed, "He's trying to sue her for some profits from the [Onyx Hotel] tour." The source says that though the pair "were trying to be friends", Jason has suddenly gone on the offensive. "He's really trying to stick it to her in terms of lawyers and money. It's been truly awful that he's now doing this," a source close to Britney revealed.

March 25, 2004 - Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes has struck back at Britney Spears after she declined to use the producers on her latest album 'In The Zone' and told reporters she's "over" the duo. Jewel repeated, "Britney sucks, Britney sucks, kill her!", prompting cheers from the audience. March 22, 2004 - Bone tattoo artist Jesse Diamond angrily denied reports that Britney Spears told him that she got her new privately placed tattoo where only Jason Alexander could see it, or that she was wearing a gold wedding band and confessed that "in her mind she was still married." Diamond fumed to Star magazine: "It's bullsh**. Britney never even mentioned this guy Jason or discussed her private life with me. And she wasn't wearing a gold wedding ring." March 11, 2004 - Larry Rodgers of The Arizona Republic reviewed Britney Spears' concert at the Glendale Arena on Wednesday (March 3). Rodgers writes, "While such new songs as the show-opening 'Toxic', 'Outrageous' and 'The Hook Up' had concertgoers moving, they came off as a bit generic live. Adding to the tentative feel is Spears' questionable approach to live vocals: While she clearly lip-synced much of her 2002 concert in Phoenix, she seemed to be singing along with tracks of her voice on Wednesday – call it 'half lip-syncing'. Things got worse when she subjected two of her biggest hits, 'Oops! … I Did It Again' and '… Baby One More Time' to lounge-lizard treatment as part of the Onyx Hotel shtick." Read more.

He added, "Wearing a tight black costume out of 'The Matrix', with pumped-up cleavage, then later turning up in a pink bra and frilly panties, among other outfits, Spears and her flock of dancers gyrated in typical synchronized moves, the women sometimes looking like sci-fi apocalypse hookers and the men at one point shirtless in just suspenders and wearing bellhop caps to keep with the hotel theme, even pushing the girls around the stage on luggage carts. Patterson said the Onyx Hotel Tour is "an ill-conceived, musically impaired event that left some of Spears' most ardent fans looking bored with arms folded and sent several to the gates before the 90-minute event had concluded." He added, "Though she denies it publicly, Spears clearly lip-synced for some, if not all, of the concert. How else to explain the controlled level of her voice, compared to the deep, heavy breathing she demonstrated while chatting between songs." Read more.

March 8, 2004 - The New York Post reports Britney Spears' choreographer, Brian Friedman, surprised her recently with a tune singer-songwriter Johnnie Mazzer found on the web, 'Rock Me, Britney'. One of the lyrics goes, "Some say she's over, some say she's done... but baby, baby, baby, she's only just begun!" Spears loved this musical show of support and phoned up Mazzer. "I was driving in L.A. and almost wrecked the car when I picked up the phone," he revealed. Britney invited Johnnie to come see her show, and the New Jersey native is thinking it over. March 8, 2004 - Us Weekly reports Britney Spears is pondering on making an offer for Cher's Italian style mansion in Malibu, California, which has an asking price of $8 to $10 million. Spears recently made two trips to Cher's 14,000-square foot home, which features seven bedrooms and sits directly on the Pacific Coast Highway with views of the ocean and mountains. A source said, "Britney loves the beach, and she loves to be close to the action in Santa Monica. Cher's place would more than accommodate her."

And that's even before you got to the stage, which was alight with bathtubs, beds, gyrating men and women, and one pink bra wearing temptress. There were also lights, videos, and an a la mode of sexy talk. In her new single 'Me Against The Music', which also features her idolized mentor Madonna, she has been praised for intuitive use of rhythm, and her visible growth creatively. March 8, 2004 - The fan who bid $6,845 for the the chance to meet Britney Spears at StubHub.com posted photos of the meeting and wrote about his experience. 16-year-old Nick Sarno writes, "This was an amazing experience I will never forget. Britney was so adorable, and very very sweet. I was SOOOOO nervous before meeting her but as ssoon as I saw her I was so relaxed and just on top of the world. He says that 'The Onyx Hotel Tour' brought the original feeling back, that they could actually feel that the fans were emotionally connected to Britney again. The emotional level at the concert was at its highest when Britney sang 'Everytime'. Fans were totally connecting with her, cheering and screaming louder than ever to a point where Britney was having a hard time beginning the song. The cheers grew even stronger and that's when she shed a couple of tears because it was like a affirmation to her how many fans still loved her and supported her despite everything that had happened, and everything that she had gone through, and when you have 15,000 fans acknowledging your heart for who you are, and nothing else, it's probably one of the greatest feelings in the world. March 5, 2004 - 'Celebrity Justice' reports Britney Spears is asking a judge to throw out claims made by Mashaiko Shizawa, who Britney once accused of stalking her. He had filed a federal lawsuit against her and two security guards. The suit claimed Shizawa suffered severe emotional distress after being confronted by Spears' people. It alleges one of the guards pointed a gun and told him to leave. As a result, Shizawa suffers from "nervousness, anxiety and chronic upset stomach." Britney now is countersuing saying she's the victim of a bogus lawsuit. Read more.

March 5, 2004 - Christina Fuoco of liveDaily reviewed Britney Spears concert at Glendale Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Fuoco writes, "Spears left little to the imagination, strutting around the stage in bra and panties for her self-fulfillment song 'Touch of My Hand'. She writhed in a glass bathtub of rose petals and confetti, touching herself, as dancers did the same a level below her. The raunchy show clearly stunned the several parents who were seen leaving." March 5, 2004 - George Varga of the San Diego Union-Tribune reviewed the Britney Spears concert Tuesday night (March 2) at the San Diego Sports Arena. Varga writes, "By any name, the 90-minute "more adult"-themed show is a conceptual mishmash that was purportedly modeled after Tommy Tune's Broadway musical 'Grand Hotel'. Unfortunately, the grandeur Tune achieved has been replaced by contrived attempts at tawdry sensationalism that suggested what might happen if Penthouse magazine were edited by Beavis & Butt-head. It was also a carefully calculated vehicle for Spears to promote her commercially and artistically tepid fourth album, 'In the Zone', while trying to disguise her glaring musical limitations and distance herself from her first two albums and the pubescent audience that made her a pop-culture sensation." March 5, 2004 - Crystal Coons of West48.com was on hand for Britney Spears' Onyx Hotel Tour stop in Phoenix on Wednesday (March 3). Coons writes, "Overall, the show was a lot less 'flashy' than previous tours, focusing more on the quality of the performances. It showed great character for her to be able to laugh at herself in the midst off all of the negative press and highs and lows that currently plague her life. March 5, 2004 - All eyes are on Britney Spears to see whether she can deliver the goods on tour and stay out of the tabloids, especially with her Satuday gig in Las Vegas, site of her 55-hour wedding to childhood friend Jason Alexander. "Her behavior has been really erratic, and people will be watching closely," Anthony DeCurtis, contributing editor at Rolling Stone told USA Today. "There's a question of whether she's through her troubles and past the point where she's a tabloid headline." Others think the music matters more than the gossip. Britney said prior to the performance, "I'm probably going to wake up and be a nervous wreck when I go to the venue." The best was 'Touch of my Hand' she wore something similar to the diamond outfit in the 'Toxic' video. Most of the time she was in bra and underwear. March 5, 2004 - Neil Strauss of the New York Times reviewed Britney Spears opening night of her Hotel Onyx Tour Tuesday (March 2) in San Diego. Strauss writes, "When Kelis, the singer who was Ms. Spears's opening act, sang her hit 'Milkshake', she was audibly winded after just a few dance moves. Ms. Spears executed even more calisthenic routines throughout most of her numbers, and rarely could the slightest puff or pant be heard in the vocals. Further evidence that the microphone was not on came when she brushed loose strands of hair off the mouthpiece, and the sound of the motion could not be heard in the arena. The lip-synching was neither a surprise nor a concern, however, because Ms. Spears is a star built not for singing but for entertaining. Her show was more a theater-and-dance spectacle than an actual concert, with the staging equal parts Cirque de Soleil and the redeveloped Times Square." Read more.

The bulk of the DVD concentrates on the live performances that last year helped tease Spears' then-upcoming album. Some of those shows were short — such as her two-song set for MTV's Spankin' New Music week and the half-hour surprise appearance at club Rain in Las Vegas.
