Jackson, a recurring character on TV's 'Moesha,' added that she wanted to "have a talk" with Spears. "Being seven months pregnant, I can't afford to be stressed out." Read more.

April 28, 2004 - In an interview with Radio 1, Jada Pinkett Smith came to the defense of Britney Spears after the singer was criticized for lip-synching on her 'Onyx Hote' UK tour opener in London. "No I haven't heard anything about that," she said when told about the miming. "She gives you an hour and a half of full-on entertainment. That's a difficult thing to do. It really is very difficult." She also defended Spears against those that said it was too raunchy. Read more.

April 28, 2004 - Are pop stars such as Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson really dopey or just purposefully blundering all way to the bank? Pop culture expert Nancy Snow tells FoxNews.com she leans toward the latter theory. "People at that level are always 'on' — they know what they're saying," said Snow, a communications professor at Cal State Fullerton. "I think it's kind of a sweetheart deal between them and the media. It really helps to feed the publicity machine." Read more.

April 28, 2004 - perfectly-imperfect writes "The legendary Little Richard was on the Ryan Seacrest show yesterday and when asked his thoughts on Britney Spears, he replied: "Britney is something else...She aint no Whitney Houston, She's no Mariah Carey. But they are not Britney Spears, and they can't entertain like her. She's an electrifying entertainer. She's a great showwoman, electrifying all the way. She's unbelievable.""

April 28, 2004 - The Daily Mail reports that after Britney Spears took her Onyx Hotel tour across the Atlantic on Monday night in London, she managed to get more mothers upset with her raunchy stage show. Catherine Navin, a 39-year-old travel agent from Hertfordshire, who was there with son Jackson, eight, and daughter Shannon, ten, said: "I felt a lot of it was over the top. At one point, when Britney appeared to be naked on stage, I told my children to shut their eyes and look away. I think they were embarrassed more than anything else." Read comments from more offended mothers here.

"She's thinking she'll just stop somewhere unannounced and hope the locals are friendly." Read more.

April 28, 2004 - Anonymous writes "Ok so I know what everyone will be saying about Britney Spears’ Onyx Hotel concert last night in Wembley... she was miming, blah, blah, blah! But whatever people say, that girl can put on a really good show. I understand that maybe miming isn't the "ideal" of what a pop singer should be, but isn't the ideal also being able to dance and keep a crowd of 12,000 entertained for over two hours?" Read more.

April 28, 2004 - Alexis Petridis of The Guardian reviewed Britney Spears' concert at Wembley Arena on Monday (April 26), giving the show only 2 out of 5 stars. Petridis said at the concert "music comes merely as an afterthought. 'Toxic' is dashed off as the set opener. 'Hit Me Baby One More Time' is delivered as a tuneless burst of cod-jazz. You leave no clearer as to whether your being of being who you be has been tranquillized or not, but with the distinct impression Britney Spears has no idea where her true strengths lie." Read more.

April 28, 2004 - Jo Ellison of the Independent reviewed Britney Spears' concert at Wembley Arena on Monday (April 26) in London. Ellison writes, "Britney's stage antics are only faintly reminiscent of her idol and sometime best friend Madonna, whose infamous 'Girlie Show' set the standards for young female pop stars seeking to make the transition from pop tart to sex bomb. Just as Madonna did 20 years ago, the show bears the same wanton contrivance. But where Madonna had the charisma and self-assurance to manipulate and control her audience, Britney seems to flounder in the same context." Read more.

April 28, 2004 - The Mirror profiled Britney Spears with the singer in the UK to kick off the European leg of her 'Onyx Hotel' tour. They write, "Her management are desperately trying to remodel her as an, ahem, "adult artist" in the face of falling record sales. Her job is to create publicity. This isn't too hard - Britney smokes, Britney dyes her hair, Britney buys a burger, Britney opens (and very quickly closes) a restaurant - anything she does is news. Her chances of leading a seemingly normal life seem slim." Read more.

April 28, 2004 - Victoria Newton of The Sun was on hand for the launch of Britney Spears' European leg of her Onyx Hotel tour before 12,000-strong at Wembley Arena, and for some reason was shocked by Spears' lip-synching throughout her set. Newton writes, "I’ve no idea why Britney felt she had to mime. She is one of our biggest, brightest and sexiest stars, she has a great voice and a great body to match — but why cheat fans with a mimed performance?" Read more.

I Did It Again' tour and 2002's 'Dream Within a Dream' tour as well as the first part of the 'Onyx Hotel' tour. Read more.

April 28, 2004 - Xreflejo writes "This essay is to all those Britney Spears fans who say that fans of Christina Aguilera can't write an essay without dissing Britney. Here is one. Back in the summer of 1999 two young, blonde and beautiful girls burst onto the musical radar. Both with catchy singles that helped them quickly ascend to the top of their game. But from the beginning one thing was clear, one of these girls had a tremendous talent that was overshadowed by too much production and a label pushing her to be what she wasn’t, a bubbly pop persona." Read more.

April 28, 2004 - nanda_lo writes "Britney Spears looks a little down in the dumps as she arrives at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles. The singer didn't look her usual chirpy self as she arrived at the hotel drinking Jamba Juice with her assistant. To make matters worse for Britney, as she pulled up to the front of her rented bungalow, she hit the curb with her front bumper and the wheel in her white Mercedes convertible making visible damage to the car - as well as parking in a red-zone - which is illegal in California. After five minutes in her bungalow however, her assistant gave the cars keys to hotel security so they could move the car into a car park and off the red-zone. Check the pictures at WorldOfBritney.com."

April 28, 2004 - News of the World reports the man Britney Spears was spotted frolicking on the beach with is Kevin Federline, a dancer at LA dance agency Bloc, who lives with his girlfriend and their daughter. Kevin tried shielding his face amongst the swarm of photographers, wondering how girlfriend of seven years Latasha Jackson and their four year old girl would feel if they turned on the news in their Los Angeles home. Britney was overheard giggling to the 26-year-old: "If you want to be my lover, you've got to get used to this." The two returned to her villa at the Beverliy Hills Hotel at midnight ordered champagne and strawberries from room service. But before her trip to London to kick off her European tour, Spears was in tears to find out her new squeeze was a love cheat. Read more.

April 28, 2004 - Colin Paterson of the Sunday Herald has interviewed Britney Spears three times. He has yet to find a brain. He writes, "But her vacant mental state is only half the reason why Britney disappoints as a cultural icon. That very status denotes some influence over society. After much thinking, here is a list of Britney’s far reaching impact: she has made the midriff fashionable; brought back the trilby and flat caps; popularised the LA bimbo look; paved the way for the likes of Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore, and made boob jobs for teenage girls commonplace. A real source of pride that lot. Oh, and if she had never kissed Madonna then there would have been no Janet Jackson nipple at the Superbowl. Britney has taken sexual shock tactics into a whole new areola." Read more.

April 28, 2004 - nanda_lo writes "After reading the last Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera essay posted here on Popdirt, I felt that I had to say something about it. First of all, everybody is sick of hearing that I'm a Britney fan. But I have got myself wondering loads of time: Why, I mean, why am I such a big fan of hers after all those stupid (some were REALLY stupid) things she has done? Well, my admiration for Britney is beyond any concepts of talent and veneration." Read more.

April 28, 2004 - Stephanie Zacharek of the New York Times reviewed Britney Spears' new video for 'Everytime'. Zacharek writes, "A slap at fans and the media, 'Everytime' suggests that Ms. Spears, greedily, wants it all: like Garbo, she wants to be alone, provided she can have a stylist. Of course, she hates the press even more than the public, and to put that across, Mr. LaChapelle gleefully screws on his funhouse lens: the paparazzi in 'Everytime' are shot with the same degree of calculation as the Jews in 'The Passion of the Christ', with hooked or bulbous noses and bulging eyes. They surround her as screaming, chubby fans claw and clutch. With monsters like these around, no wonder the Britney of 'Everytime' wants to wash herself clean." Read more.

April 25, 2004 - Alessandra Stanley of the New York Times reviewed 'Brave New Girl', the ABC Family movie (Sunday at 8 PM ET/PT) executive produced by Britney Spears and her mother, Lynne. Stanley writes, "Not surprisingly, the film is a marketing venue for Ms. Spears's music, though the sales pitch is laughably forced — her pop tunes are held up as the kind of inspirational leitmotif that emboldens deprived teenagers to dream and gives downtrodden single moms a jolt of confidence. But the plot also allows the two women to weave a fantasy of mother-daughter love that is smolderingly intense and noticeably at odds with the light, banal, after-school-special tone of the rest of the movie." Read more.

April 25, 2004 - Star magazine is comparing Britney Spears' current situation with Mariah Carey, wondering if Britney will have a Mariah-like meltdown. They cite that last month, Britney broke down during a pre-interview for a national TV segment. "You could tell she was afraid of saying the wrong thing," a source revealed. "Britney didn't seem in control. She was being pushed around by the people with her. Then all of a sudden, she burst into tears." As for problems on her Onyx Hotel tour, another source said, "She wasn't prepared to start this tour, emotionally and physically. I'm afraid for her. Justin Timberlake told me he's worried about her, too." Read more.

April 25, 2004 - FoxNews.com reports America's prepubescent girls continue to emulate the dress styles and attitudes of their older role models: Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Paris Hilton. But some girls say the sexy trends have created a backlash within their social circles — and they've even got a word for them. "They're called 'prostitots,'" said Anna Miressi, a Kingston, N.Y., high school freshman who claims the term is commonly used among her peers. "It's those girls at the mall with the tight jeans and belly shirts. They're in between the age group of 10 to 13 or 14." Read more.

April 25, 2004 - nanda_lo writes "Britney Spears was spotted Tuesday (April 20) leaving the palatial surroundings of the Beverly Hills Hotel with a new handsome tattooed friend. Britney and friend went to take off in her SL 500 Mercedes convertible and found her convertible roof not working much to her disgust. She arrived at a dance studios in the valley were she joined her dancers for a short practice session. Check out the pictures at BritneyOnlineGallery.com."

Bryan was surprised yet again when Carmen Electra and her racy Pussycat dolls took the stage at 9 P.M. for a 20-minute set. Bryan "loved it -- he was in shock," says a partygoer. Then Spears came on to sing 'Happy Birthday' acapella in the Pussycat Dolls costume of a bra, panties, corset, and fishnet stockings. April 25, 2004 - YouBetterBelieveIt writes "In Touch reports that two hours after Britney Spears was expected to take the stage, she fled her purple bus tour bus in the parking lot of a Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherfold, New Jersey, hysterically crying. "You think I am crazy?" she screamed at an assistant trying to comfort her, acoording to a witness. "If you had to deal with the dumb asses I have to deal with, you'd be crazy, too." Despite the hysterics, Britney's first New York-area concert on her current Onyx Hotel tour went off without a hitch. But the tour, which has been plagued by bad reviews, complaints about its sexual content, injuries and ilnesses-which caused the cancelation of three dates-has not gone smoothly."

April 25, 2004 - Michael Musto of the Village Voice took in Britney Spears' concert at the Continental Airlines Arena. He writes, "I can attest to the fact that her aggressively vampy stage persona doesn't corrupt people in the least. The crowd she drew mainly consisted of pudgy teen girls with glasses (with an occasional L'Oréaled gay boy thrown in), and they were all pristinely behaved, none of them preggers or with any visible STDs! And Britney really turned up the orgasm juice. She doesn't do any of those icky 'I'm not a girl' ballads anymore (not to mention the Madonna duet that almost wrecked her career). She indulges us exclusively in her trademark panting, gyrating, and perspiring pop, while proving to be our favorite dirty-girl next door since Ann-Margret and George Michael combined." Read more.

April 25, 2004 - Britney Spears tells MTV News deciding who would play the character based on herself in the ABC Family film 'Brave New Girl' was a "very tough choice." All three finalists were "so cute, so amazing," and all were able to switch quickly from reading dramatic scenes with a casting director to singing a cappella to the room of producers. But it was 19-year-old Lindsey Haun, the granddaughter of an opera tenor and the daughter of a guitarist from Air Supply, who made Spears mouth the word "wow" after she gave the film's producers a sample of her singing voice during the casting sessions. "That's so weird, they have to be so serious about one thing, and then [totally change gears]," Spears said. "But they did it, honey, they were amazing. They all stand out in a huge way. And [Lindsey] was hot. I was really impressed." 'Brave New Girl' airs Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC Family. Read more.

April 21, 2004 - When Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake split up, Justin's *NSYNC bandmate JC Chasez was in the difficult position of being friends with both. They were both friends of mine but Justin was in my band. It's difficult but you can't take sides. Britney didn't break my heart, she broke his, so I'm not going to start having a go at her. So much of what they went through was done in public. Some of it has to remain private." Read more.

April 21, 2004 - nanda_lo writes "Monday was Britney Spears' older brother Bryan's 27th birthday, and to celebrate, Britney played a practical joke on him! She got in touch with some friends and got someone from the FBI to arrest her brother, handcuffs and all. She then runs around the street in a panic, looking angry and upset at the same time at the FBI. They later took him to the 'FBI' - or so he thought, but really it was a huge Birthday party arranged by Britney. Check out pictures here."

April 21, 2004 - Anonymous writes "Okay. If you don't want to read anything about Christina Aguilera or Britney Spears I suggest you don't read this but its all up to you. I am a fan of Christina and Britney, just to clarify. I both respect them, enjoy their music, and been to each of their shows. Personally I think Christina has an amazing voice there is no doubt that she can sing. Britney doesn't have as strong as a voice but with the songs Britney sings her voice is good. I mean Britney's voice is decent. Christina's is amazing, I am not going to lie. Personally I love Britney's songs especially her new songs, I am not expecting everyone to like it but I like them." "Everyone hits on her when they see her -- she's such a cutie-pie," he joked. "No, I didn't hit on her. But I did tell her that I wanted to trade shrts with her. Remember the shirt that she wore? We traded. She sent it to me. I wish I could tell you that she gave me the shirt off her back, but she was a little bit younger than she is today. Everyone loves to take the piss out of her, but she brings joy to a lot of people. And she's got a nice ass."

April 21, 2004 - Spearsworld writes "Speaking as an avid fan of both Britney Spears' performance prowess and Christina Aguilera's unparalleled belting, I have to say the Onyx Hotel Tour was more entertaining than the Justified/Stripped tour-hands down. When I saw her and Justin last July, it doesn't matter whether or not the show sold out because more than 70 percent of the audience seemed to be there to see Justin." Read more.

So long as I feel totally comfortable, if it's something I want to do I'll do it regardless of what anyone has to say about it. I have full control of what I do, I simply take it as part of my job."

April 19, 2004 - Joshua Klein of the Chicago Tribune reviewed Britney Spears' concert at the Allstate Arena Tuesday night (April 13). Klein writes, "The heavily choreographed acts were comically exaggerated, as if conceived by someone whose glitzy, gaudy idea of the real world begins and ends in Las Vegas. But while Spears' painstakingly prurient production tried to be transgressive, it felt regressive, an unimaginative sexcapade apparently inspired by the pneumatic gyrations of lap dancers and porn stars. The bulk of Britney's show was basically a PG-13 pajama party, with the star and her Cirque du Soleil-ready dancers cavorting about the busy stage to songs such as 'Toxic' and '... Baby One More Time', the latter transformed with 'Oops! I Did It Again' into virtually anonymous jazz ditties." Read more.

April 19, 2004 - Rabbi Shmuley Boteach writes: "Why have millions of young American women abandoned the feminist dream of being taken seriously by men and instead decided to gain male attention with degrading spectacles of their bodies? I am convinced that the principal cause is an increasingly weak link between fathers and daughters. In our society, we have it all backward. Too much is made of the father-son relationship at the expense of the father-daughter one. The image of a boy being taught by his dad to catch a baseball or throw a football is commonplace, while the only mainstream image of a father interacting with his teenage daughter is telling her not to come home too late when she goes out with her boyfriend. Pop tarts like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, who use partial nudity to advance their careers, are often close to their mothers, who may even serve as their managers, while their dads are nowhere to be seen." April 19, 2004 - Unfortunate420 writes "The Onyx Hotel tour may be too sexed up for some but when thinking about the 22 year old pop-star. You know why? Britney Spears is grown up and rebelling. She needs to first shed the teen queen skin before she can do her thing. That's what this album was about. Britney shedding her old image. From what I have noticed many people don't like this switch - Mostly adult critics who don't know what's "in" if they were smacked on the face with it." Read more.

April 14, 2004 - Potpot writes "I'm going straight to the point. If you are intellectual enough, you might understand what I am saying. Yes, Britney Spears is talented. If you are intellectual enough, you would agree that the main problem in trying to evaluate whether Britney Spears indeed has the gifts of an artist is the conventional definition of musical talent which states that an artist is talented if he/she can write a song, do something innovative, or sing without studio aid. Most opinions are firmly rooted in such a vague definition of musical ingenuity." Read more.

April 14, 2004 - 'Hardball with Chris Matthews' producer Howard Mortman shared his thoughts on Britney Spears' comments in People magazine about her reaction to September 11, 2001, and how it contrasted with her celebrity colleagues who offered surly remarks devoid of political motivation, including those by Madonna, Cher, and Backstreet Boys star Kevin Richardson. Britney says, "One of the most significant things that's happened in the last 30 years was the tragedy of Sept. 11. I was on my way overseas on that sad day and I couldn't get back to the U.S.A. right away, and I was very worried about my brother who was in New York. During this time when the whole world was grieving, I just wanted to go home and be with my family and appreciate life even more." Mortman says in response, "For Britney’s sake, and our own sanity, let’s linger a bit over her memory of 9/11. It’s probably the most intelligent thing she’s ever said." Read more.

April 14, 2004 - Edna Gundersen of USA Today took part in a chat with the newspaper's readers on Tuesday and was asked if she thought Britney Spears would try to match the recent moves by Jessica Simpson with more television exposure. "Britney is so overexposed at this point that the only smart move is a long vacation at a Siberian spa," Gunderson responded. "Likewise, Jessica is dangerously close to the media saturation zone. I missed the variety show (any reports?) so I can't weigh in on her prospects as the new Cher, but there is something oddly appealing about her willingness to milk her own cerebral limitations for attention and laughs. It will be interesting to see which arena, TV or music, is more lucrative for her." Read more.

April 14, 2004 - The New York Post reports Britney Spears kept the controversial suicide scene in her new video for 'Everytime' in an effort to be "edgy". An insider sneered, "The sad thing is, her label Jive is bragging about it because they think it is so edgy." Earlier reports suggested the scene would be reworked and despite the Post's claims, there wasn't anything to suggest suicide unless they mistook the Kabbalah string for a slit wrist. The blood apparently came from behind her head, though there was no moment she was struck behind the head in the video (paparazzi hit her forehead -- and she was facing forward during the Stephen Dorff vase throwing), and no blood was visible as she walked into the bathroom. Not to mention there wasn't near enough blood loss to cause her to pass out. Spears says the video is about reincarnation.

Reynolds appeared to peddle cigarettes to kids using cartoon camels, Spears pushed her product using questionable packaging. The lingerie was candy-colored, the steamy air filled with glittering confetti. Between songs, Spears engaged in playground patter, whispering about cute guys in the audience, pretending that this band member had a crush on that one, and so on." Read more.

"Between her parents and her bodyguards, she's never left alone," the source revealed. "You know how she used to go into the bathrooms on her own?" rhetorically asked the source. "No more." The main reason is whenever she enters a bathroom, many onlookers want to sneak a peek. "What her bodyguards do is go in to clear out the restroom of the club or restaurant she's in--and then they stay in there," the insider explained. "Just to see that she's okay."

April 12, 2004 - Globe magazine spoke with Suite 16 Club doorman Wass Stevens who recalled an incident where he tipped *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake that Britney Spears, who at the time he had just recently broken up with, was headed to the club. "She went up to the DJ and played on of Justin's songs," he explained. "Then she sent him a bottle of champagne. He didn't want any part of it. So we dressed up a busboy in Justin's hat and jacket and had him walk right by her and out of the club. Britney thought he was gone, so she left. Meanwhile, Justin was hiding out back."

For most of the 90-minute 'Onyx Hotel' show, Spears deferred to the safety of lipsynching - and what a tender mercy that she did. The few times she sang flagrantly live, Spears navigated the notes like a person trying to drive a car after downing an entire bottle of Scotch." Read more.

April 12, 2004 - Dan Aquilante of the New York Post reviewed Britney Spears' show Saturday (April 10) at the Continental Airlines Arena. Aquilante writes, "It was apparent from start to finish this was an adult-themed evening that was sexually explicit and not suitable for the little kids who packed the house and still count the 22-year-old pop icon as their own. By midshow, protective mother's were yanking their broods out of their seats before all innocence was lost in the bat of an eye and the flip of a hip. Don't blame Britney for selling real estate in Sodom and Gomorrah; her show was entertaining to the max - sexual and seductive without venturing into sleazy. Blame the naive parents who didn't believe that this Madonna-kissing former Mouseketeer is all grown-up." Read more.

April 10, 2004 - The New York Post reports Britney Spears jumped onstage during drag queen Princess Diandra's "boxers or briefs?" contest at Lucky Cheng's the other night, in which her tour manager was competing, and stripped off the clothes of all three men on stage. She doesn't even look at the price." And Spears never wants her purchases shipped or packed, the source added. "She likes to wear them home when she can." Britney explained her love for shopping admitting: "I can be in the dumps of dumpsters and go buy a pair of new shoes, and then it's ok. For that moment, it's what I need."

April 8, 2004 - Christopher Blagg of the Boston Herald was at the Verizon Wireless Center in Manchester on Tuesday (April 6) for the latest stop on Britney Spears' Onyx Hotel tour. Blagg writes, "With apocalyptically dressed dancers floating down from the rafters, Spears made her grand entrance in a tight black Catwoman suit atop a metal bus singing her latest hit single 'Toxic'. Actually, Britney rarely sang anything at all. Lip-synching was the order of the night, and while she was adept at this skill, it contrasted sharply with the slower ballads where she managed to flex a couple vocal chords. Obviously Britney's tightly choreographed performances are not intended to be vocal showcases, but the miming was disappointing nonetheless. Her one attempt at the piano was also suspect as her hands were cleverly hidden." Read more.

Kelley Heinsman, 20, an economics major at Emory University, summed up the show stating: "She can't sing for sh**, but her dancing is awesome." And Kloer concluded, "What was lacking was any sense of personality; any connection between Spears and the audience was supplied by the audience. Spears has always trafficked in the flawlessness of her physical image — she is to music what Anna Kournikova is to tennis — and the symbiosis between her, the media and her fans is like the whole youth culture, distilled to its essence. She's our national Barbie doll — a best-seller, an icon, and utterly plastic." Read more.

Stevenson writes, "If Spears' 55-hour Las Vegas marriage earlier this year or that infamous kiss with Madonna last August weren't enough clues that she's all grown up now, I'm not sure what is. 'I'm seeing a lot of you fellas in the audience tonight -- you feeling lucky?' asked the pop star, echoing a line she's been saying since the beginning of her tour in San Diego early last month. Actually it was a pretty passion-less delivery from Spears, much like the rest of her performance despite two naughty numbers that would follow." Read more.

Abram writes of Spears' new image: "It's the new Britney and all of those adult subjects are only part of the grown-up Spears. Like Christina Aguilera, yet another former Mousekateer who shook her teen pop queen image to become an adult neo-diva, 'maturation' for young women in pop music seems to mean dressing scantily and bumping and grinding at nearly every opportunity. Interestingly, Aguilera, who is a talented singer with the fashion sense of a well-financed streetwalker, often gets tagged a 'skank' while Spears, whose talent lies almost entirely in her looks, moves and willingness to use both to generate money, merely gets tagged racy or controversial. Aguilera also has yet to marry a friend on a whim only to sober up and change her mind several hours later." Read more.

Her usual brassy platinum hair has been given a stunning ash blond rinse, and she used her longish locks to full effect. She whipped her hair frantically throughout her dance routines, but how odd (cue rolling of eyes) that it never made a sound as it smacked against her microphone." Read more.
