August 30, 2003 - Linda Stasi of the New York Post weighed in on the outfits worn by Jessica Simpson and Christina Aguilera to the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday. "Talk about taste - or lack of it, in Aguilera's case," Stasi sneered. "Not since Bjork showed up as a swan has anyone shown such creativity in bird outfits. Instead of just coming as, say, a parrot, Aguilera went the whole cycle - and turned up as a feather duster. Then there was Jessica Simpson, who looked like an astronaut's wife, or more correctly, an astronaut's wife moonlighting as a stripper." Read more.

August 30, 2003 - Don Hudson of the Charlotte Observer weighed in on 'The Kiss'. He writes, "Watching film of the MTV Video Music Awards from Thursday night, when Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears were making out with Madonna, I've got to say: I was a little saddened. Is that the point where sex has fallen? Where a preprogrammed, prime-time buss between two post-Mouseketeer pop tarts and a fading 45-year-old artistic icon has commercialized sex so much there is no shock value left? I just yawned." August 30, 2003 - Christina Aguilera was more than happy to speak for Britney Spears regarding their kiss with Madonna at the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday. "Britney was a little shy at first. Shaun Robinson asked Aguilera, "Did you tell her, 'C'mon Britney, loosen up. This is nothing at all?" Aguilera responded, "Well overall I think she needs to do that but it's OK." Read more.

August 30, 2003 - xanthe writes "It's funny how this Madonna performance on the VMAs has worsened the rivalry between Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. If Britney and Christina hated each other, they would not have performed together. They obviously have some sort of friendship or mutual respect for each other. But their fans are blind to this." Read more.

But Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon said: "I wish it was me she was snogging." VMA host Chris Rock said: "That kiss was good, but where was mine?" Read more.

Aguilera says Spears did "the open-mouth thing" even though "Madonna knew she wanted closed-mouth" on the show.

August 30, 2003 - Victoria Newton of The Sun weighed in on the choreographed kiss between Madonna and younger peers Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. She says, "At 45, Madge is older than Britney and Christina put together. I’ve watched how the youngsters have shamelessly tried to steal Madonna’s thunder in the past few years. But judging by her latest trick, there’s no doubt Madge still has no trouble putting young pretenders in their place." Read more, and check out more pictures from the performance, including reactions from Britney's ex Justin Timberlake of *NSYNC and Madonna's hubby Guy Ritchie, here.

August 30, 2003 - B.J. Sigesmund, entertainment reporter for Newsweek, Thelma Adams, film critic for Us Weekly, and Tom O'Neil, senior editor for In Touch Weekly were on American Morning on CNN Friday morning to talk about the MTV Video Music Awards and of course weighed in on the Madonna and Britney Spears and Madonna and Christina Aguilera kisses. Sigesmund said, "I thought that the first 20 minutes were just amazing. I thought you don't get a bigger pop culture moment than that opening number with Christina and Britney, first of all, long-time rivals. They were doing an amage to one of the biggest and most dichotic moments in MTV history." Adams added, "I just thought she was just sliming them. I mean, I don't know. I guess I missed the big cultural moment." O'Neil added, "I thought this was very unfair throughout the rest of the night that they didn't cut to Britney every time Justin won another award for the video that he slams Britney. That would have been interesting." Read more.

August 30, 2003 - Britney Spears, Carmen Electra, Christina Aguilera, Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction, Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit, Gisele Bundchen, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan, Loon, Metallica, Michelle Branch, Pamela Anderson, Paulina Rubio, Q-Tip, Rob Zombie, and Sean 'P. Comedian Dennis Miller remarked, "I am repulsed but strangely aroused." Moos herself said, "The last time a kiss caused such a stir was when Al Gore planted one on Tipper. Sure, there have been other same-sex kisses, from 'All My Children' to 'Ellen,' but none with this star power." And when *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake was asked if he wanted to chime in on the kiss, he responded, "I would have rather chimed in on that kiss on stage." Read more.

August 30, 2003 - Mo Rocca of Comedy Central was on 'Live From...' on CNN on Friday to chat with host Heidi Collins about the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday night, and again weighed in on the Madonna kisses with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. He said, "... first of all say I thought the evening was surprisingly flat. I was hoping for something more in the spirit of Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1977 'Oui' interview. In fact at moments I became so bored I kept going back to that interview. I have it on microfiche, so I can access it at any time. The -- I suppose the Madonna, Britney, Christina kiss in their mock sort of wedding little setup there was the big highlight for everybody. This was Madonna, once again, being political. This was her rebuttal to Justice Scalia's rebuttal to the Texas Supreme Court decision. Sort of her way of stepping out there and making a statement." Read more.

August 30, 2003 - Virginia Heffernan of Slate reviewed the MTV Video Music Awards and spoke about the "orgy of duets" and of course the Madonna kiss with Britney Spears. "Madonna had come as the man—the sugar daddy, maybe, twirling the little girls, keeping them in line, and finally kissing Spears," Heffernan said. "She also kissed Aguilera, to be fair, but the camera barely registered it, and we all know that Madonna has long leered at Britney. Britney swooned into the kiss, her mouth soft. The small thrill of this kiss was real to me because, though girls making out with girls is an old party stunt, this time it came off as female lechery: overmuscled, rich, landed matriarch Madonna (in tails, no less) praying on sweetie Spears, who (in wedding white) hasn't even had a first marriage yet. 'Hollywood,' Madonna cooed as she brushed hair tenderly from Britney's face. 'How could it hurt you when it looks so good?' I expect we'll see this wise-woman/callow-girl romance around more now. Britney and Madonna certainly recalled the matchup in 'Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle' of smiley Cameron Diaz with shrewd Demi Moore, another pure protein icon of perimenopause." Read more.

August 30, 2003 - The utterly contrived, lingering kisses with which Madonna chose to draw the cameras at the MTV Video Music Awards show that she is desperate to revive our waning interest, writes Sam Leith of the Telegraph. He says, "In snogging them both, she confuses matters. Britney and Christina, when they were on the way up seven or eight years ago, were rivals. Now they have both been superseded by Beyonce Knowles. So they are vulnerable to getting involved in this sort of silliness - but too foolish to hold out for exclusivity. Madonna got her headlines." Read more.

August 30, 2003 - Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh is weighing in on the MTV Video Music Awards kiss between Madonna and younger peers Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. He says on his official website, "We had Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera open-mouth kissing Madonna. Imagine you are a militant Islamist, imagine that you are Al-Qaeda. One of the theories that has been bandied about by some to explain why we are targeted by these terrorists is our decadence, correct? They don't like our culture, and they especially don't like the exportation of our culture. Do you think it's possible that this kind of thing could further fuel the fires of hatred that the militant Islamists have for us? I'm just posing a question." Read more.

August 30, 2003 - Tenacious D singer Jack Black tells Launch.com his favorite moment of the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday night was the opening number when Madonna planted a kiss on Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. "Britney, Madonna--that was the hot one," Black said. "And if you notice, when she turned to kiss the other chick, not as much tongue--afraid of the skanky sores on the side of her mouth. I calls 'em like I sees 'em and she was holding back on the kiss on the other chick." Read more.

August 30, 2003 - Extra got reaction from celebrities at the MTV Video Music Awards after-party concerning Madonna kissing Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Actor Jason Biggs joked, "The kiss was hot. I couldn’t stand up for five minutes." Britney's rumored ex and Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst added, "Definitely the kiss was a cool thing. It brought back a lot of memories. What?" Carmen Electra says, "It was hot." But her fiance Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction played safe with his answer. "I’ve already got the most beautiful woman on the planet," he said. "What’s to be jealous about?" Watch the video clip here.

August 29, 2003 - Christina Aguilera has raised eyebrows and quickened pulses with her barely there outfits, but the self-proclaimed Dirrty girl has no master plan for her VMA grand entrance tonight. "It depends on what mode I'm in," Aguilera teased to MTV News. "I'm an artist that everyone knows loves to change characters a lot. I don't like to play it safe. So this time around I might go for something people might not expect. I could come in a nun's outfit ... and that'll be great!" Read more.

August 25, 2003 - Lisa Rose of The Newark Star-Ledger was on hand at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford on Wednesday where the Justified and Stripped tour rolled in. Rose said of the performance by Christina Aguilera: "Rival teen diva Britney Spears has done this shtick before, and better. Because Spears relies heavily on pre-recorded vocals in concert, she is able to fully devote herself to the visual element. Aguilera actually sings, limiting her ability to create elaborate tableaus. There's no arguing Aguilera's vocal talent, but her material is so rife with mediocrity that one longs for the distraction of a Spears-esque bungee jump or FX downpour." As for *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake's performance, she says, "Even if he was overpowered by his band at times, Timberlake is an engaging performer with a handful of killer tunes. He proved that he's got the chops to outlive teen pop. The jury is still out on Aguilera." Read more.

August 25, 2003 - dazeme11531 writes "Well, I must say.... that the Justified and Stripped Concert was definitely worth the money! I just got back from the August 23 show in Albany, NY and it was the best time I have ever had! To start off, tonight was the last night the Black Eyed Peas would be with Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera, so for 'Where is the Love', Justin came out to sing the chorus of the song along with all his dancers and Christina's dancers as well. Christina's show was awesome! She really knows how to put on a good show! My favorite part was when she sang 'Lady Marmalade'. Her voice is amazing live! Justin's half of the show was by far my favorite! The *NSYNC star sang ALL of my favorite songs off of 'Justified' and the 10 minutes he beat boxed was crazy! (He did wave and smile at me!) Justin is definitely a great performer and so is Christina. I must say that after tonight, I am an even bigger fan of both of them!"

Aquilante says, "The kids at the Uniondale, L.I., show would tell you Justin was terrific. But compared with his performance last Wednesday at an after-midnight Irving Plaza showcase, the Coliseum concert was a hollow, plastic symphony in schmaltz, replete with gadgets, gizmos and stage shenanigans." As for Aguilera, he says, "Despite her annoying fake laugh, her wandering stage patter - and a wardrobe even Cher would reject - the diminutive singer was herself at this performance. She didn't try to be the blond pop genie in a bottle. Instead, she educated her fans with a couple of ballads made famous by Etta James." Read more.

Farber savaged Christina Aguilera's performance while praising Justin Timberlake's effort. "Aguilera's immaturity showed most in her oversinging," Farber wrote. "Hitting notes just for show, she sounded like she was auditioning for 'American Idol.' Is it too late to vote her off?" He says of the *NSYNC star's set, "Timberlake oozed confidence and emphasized music, rather than his image. Backed by an ace band, Timberlake showcased material that put his *NSYNC work to shame. Unlike his female counterpart, Timberlake has settled on a cohesive new sound that combines raw hip-hop with pop-soul." Read more.

The first half-hour will deal with the girl's side of the gender gap, exploring what it means to be a lady and how sexuality does not fit into that picture. It will also take a look at how an emerging female sexuality in pop culture is not necessarily trickling down to real girls' lives. The second half-hour, it's the guys' turn, the mold that they're supposed to fit into: tall, strong, aggressive, and all about the ladies. Tune in on Monday, August 18, at 6 pm ET/PT."

They will, instead, get money from their insurance companies. And then the insurers will probably sue. Read more.

August 18, 2003 - WENN reports Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl again laughed off gossip that linked him to Christina Aguilera. "It was huge news in America, to my amazement, because it was completely untrue," Grohl explained. "The story was ridiculous. We were both in the same studio and we bumped into each other in a communal kitchen and we talked, and that was the only conversation we had. But she's a kid, man - what age is she, 2 or something? She's a child and I'm an old rock guy. A few days later I was at home and the phone was ringing off the hook because a local radio station said I was dating Christina. I phoned the station and told them to get real. Jordyn (Grohl's wife) and I had a laugh about it."

August 18, 2003 - Carly Carioli of the Boston Phoenix profiled *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake and his 'Justified and Stripped' tourmate Christina Aguilera. "Justin Timberlake’s 'Cry Me a River' is an innovative pop song, but it probably would not have captured the popular imagination quite so well without an accompanying video framed expressly as a revenge against his famous ex-girlfriend," Carioli explained. "The story lines of the 'Justified and Stripped' tour that he and Christina Aguilera brought to the FleetCenter last week were established well in advance: two ex-Mouseketeers united in an uneasy alliance against a third; and, more important, the evolution of teen pop into something with a longer shelf life. Of course, each performer had his or her own agenda. During the pre-tour media blitz, Aguilera accentuated the aggressive flirtatiousness that she consistently mistakes for a display of self-confidence on her latest album, 'Stripped'. Timberlake could scarcely contain his disdain — he looked like a boy who’d been saddled with his little sister’s annoying friend for a prom date." Read more.

I kinda asked before, I said, 'You know, this kinda has her spirit to it, you know, this sounds a little like Christina Aguilera,' and everybody was just like, 'Yeah, yeah.'
