Well Christian
pop has come
a long way from its
obscure past. But, it
still is a bit player
compared
to the mainstream pop
scene that commands many
times more peep's
attention.
Dallas,
Texas
native Jessica Simpson has
the voice and the look
that overcomes
any negative stigma from
playing or signing these
artists as mainstream
pop stars. While signing
with Columbia (Sony) may
not allow Jessica to
'preach' like she may want
to, she at least isn't
being pushed into singing
sexual based lyrics that
many in her group of sexy
young diva's like Britney
Spears or Christina
Aguilera may be steered
towards. Interestingly,
Jessica
initially was rejected by
the Christian music
establishment because as
she says "...they were
like, 'You're too sexy to
be singing Christian
music.'
That really hurt me,
because those weren't my
intentions at all. I was
in overalls and a
ponytail, and they were
telling me I couldn't go
out
there and sing because it
would make boys lust." The
big reason Jessica
Simpson signed with Sony,
under the wings of Tommy
Mottola, was that she
wanted to still sing
lyrics that supported the
idea of abstinence and
commitment.
Any ways, her
Sweet Kisses
album is her first
release and includes a
song Jessica co-wrote
Heart of
Innocence, whose idea
came straight from one
of Jessica's dreams,
designed
to appeal to the young
teen virgin ideal of
Jessica's own beliefs,
which
she says you can be
confident about your
sexuality without having
sex.
Somehow I have the
feeling the number of
guys that would wait
until marriage
to get nude with Jessica
would number in the
1000s, so she has plenty
of
reason to be confident
about her sexuality! She
also did a song on the
album with Nick Lachey
of 98 Degrees called Where
You Are. Jessica
and Nick were together
around two years before
just recently deciding
to
step back from their
relationship and focus
on their careers... At
least
that's the 'official
line'. The announcement
shocked many since
earlier
in the year the two were
rumored to be engaged
Before Jessica had her
relationship
with Nick, she briefly
dated an unnamed
celebrity whom she
confides, "this
guy who I was, like,
totally in love with -
an actor. He dumped me
because
I wouldn't sleep with
him, and I was like,
'I'm never dating
anybody in
the entertainment
industry again. All
they're out for is
sex.'"
Jessica had
toured with 98
Degrees before the
release of the album. In
fact during one
performance,
Jessica admits in her
diary on her official
site that which doing a
dance
move, she actually
ripped her pants in the
butt. She told MTV news
of the
incident "It was really,
really embarrassing. I
started backing up off
the stage, and I told my
dancers to take over,
and people were flashing
their cameras. Then my
mom comes running
backstage, and I'm just
laying
there crying. I didn't
know what to do, and she
takes off her jeans and
she puts them on me like
any good mother would,
and I go back out there
and I sing my ballad and
then I get a standing
ovation. That made it
worthwhile.
Kind of." She's not sure
if anyone saw her bare
ass, but it is hoped by
thousands of web surfers
that the moment was
captured on film and
uploaded
to the internet. Jessica
is definitely one to
keep an eye on in the
coming
years as many wonder how
she'll evolve and
confront moralistic
situations
while trying to advance
her career.
