January 29, 2002 - Craig Seymor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution added his name to the hat of columnists offering advice to Mariah Carey on getting her career turned around. Seymor suggests her "artoonish persona is stealing the focus from your multi-octave voice." He also said get rid of the '80s samples, reduce the rap guest stars, put some clothes on, and go away for awhile. Read more.

January 29, 2002 - Mariah Carey booked herself into The We Care Center in Desert Hot Springs, California for a weeks worth of treatment shortly before it was announced that EMI/Virgin Records payed $49 million to buy her out of her record contract. The exclusive desert spa specializes in detox and juice fasting in a new age environment. An onlooker at the retreat says, "Some people who come here look terrible, but she looked fine." January 28, 2002 - The New York Post reports Mariah Carey and Mira Sorvino only hung out with each other if it was a press opportunity at the Sundance Film Festival, where they tried to quell rumors the two didn't get along on the set of 'Wise Girls'. A spy revealed, "When they went to the Motorola house to do interviews, Mira sulked in the background because everyone really just wanted to talk to Mariah." Read more.

January 28, 2002 - The Sydney Morning Herald examined the EMI & Mariah Carey split and what the music company was thinking in paying Carey $49 million not to sing. They wrote, "There are times when I wonder if the phrase 'music business' is actually an oxymoron. Certainly the treatment of Mariah Carey by EMI seems an extraordinarily bad piece of business that has got nothing at all to do with music." Read more.

January 27, 2002 - Jonathan Takiff of the Philadelphia Daily News profiled the continuing tend of pop stars crossing over into film. Takiff examined the successes and failures of Mandy Moore, Eminem, Mariah Carey, *NSYNC, Britney Spears, and Madonna. Takiff said, "Even though 'Glitter' and 'On the Line' bombed badly at the box office and soundtrack chart, and the advance word on Spears' road trip isn't promising much besides the chance to see the pop queen in a wet T-shirt, these low-budget films are all likely to recoup their relatively slight investments through home video, airline and TV showings." January 26, 2002 - New York Times reported that during an interview in Arizona after the annoucement of leaving EMI, Mariah has this to say about the notion that she is very competitive with other female singers is untrue. She went on "You know, if you're not acting catty with other women," she said, "then you have to be forlorn and miserable and waiting for your long- lost love to rescue you." She said she almost laughed when she recently saw an unsmiling picture of herself in The National Enquirer along with a caption about her moping. "Because I'm not beaming with a radiant smile every two minutes, then I'm lonely and waiting for my hero," she said. "Well, guess what? I'm not waiting for my hero. I'm my own hero. That's my job." January 26, 2002 - Variety reports Mariah Carey's lawyer Marshall Grossman again sounding off on the EMI use of the word 'termination' after the label and his client parted. Grossman blasted, "Mariah was not happy with Virgin and she wanted out. We negotiated (Carey's departure) for over two months. There were to be no further statements by either side other than the joint press release. EMI's lame explanation is that they were simply reporting the $28 million payment as a public company." January 26, 2002 - Conan O'Brien joked during his Thursday night monologue, "This week, the EMI Record company -- listen to this -- paid Mariah Carey $28 million to leave their record label. [ Laughter ] Yeah, and in a related story, Michael Bolton will soon be worth $3 billion."

January 25, 2002 - The New York Daily News reports stories that Whitney Houston went ballistic on Arista chief L.A. Reid are untrue. A friend of Whitney revealed, "Whitney couldn't care less," but added, "Besides, why would Mariah go to Arista, when there's no way the label would pay her the $125 million [for a multi-record deal] that Whitney got?" January 25, 2002 - Access Hollywood led Thursday's show with comments from the music stars that turned up to the Jay-Z & R. Kelly press conference, all who were in support of and interested in signing Mariah Carey. R. Kelly himself said, "She should holler at me, man, because I could turn the whole thing around." January 25, 2002 - Pagesix.com spoke with some music and fashion insiders for their thoughts on what Mariah Carey should do next following her departure from EMI. January 25, 2002 - The Herald Sun reports music labels have seeked to reduce costs at a time of slowing CD sales and growing music piracy, which was behind EMI's decision to part ways with Mariah Carey. The label could not take the risk of another expensive failure. Part of huge expense of Mariah was her many handlers, prompting a Virgin Records exec to say of her and other high profile acts that have recently been cut to say, "It's not just the salary. There are all the add-ons, such as first-class travel and beauticians which many artists have become accustomed to." Read more.

January 25, 2002 - Reuters Sue Zeidler spoke with Mariah Carey's lawyer Donald Passman who revealed recording companies have already shown interest his client ever since speculation of her breakup with EMI began circulating weeks ago. Passman said, "There are several major music labels who have been going after her since the rumors started. My sense is we'll be talking in earnest very shortly." Read more.

January 25, 2002 - Pagesix.com reports Mariah Carey is in discussions with Def Jam records for a two-album deal at $3 million to $5 million per album, according to a source. Apparently Mariah is talking directly to Def Jam CEO and President Lyor Cohen trying to hammer out a deal, though a spokeswoman said she was unaware of any such talks. Read more.

January 24, 2002 - Launch.com spoke with Mariah Carey's attorney Marshall B. Grossman who had tough words for EMI following the company's choice of titling a press release, 'Virgin Terminates Contract With Mariah Carey'. Grossman wouldn't rule out further legal action for the move and said of possible fan reaction to the $49 million buyout, "Given her track record and history and her status--with over 150 million albums sold--I think most of her fans would say she deserved every penny of it. And in the wake of EMI's conduct I suspect many of her fans would say that she should now receive more. January 24, 2002 - The Sun has their take on the Mariah Carey EMI bust-up and word that she could now be on the verge of a deal with Arista — though strictly on their terms. A source told the Sun, "Mariah needs to go back to the ballads that made her the world’s No1 female star. Her new image has been a disaster. She needs to return to her roots and stop trying to be something she isn’t." Read more.

January 24, 2002 - The New York Post reports Whitney Houston "went ballistic" Wednesday when she learned Mariah Carey was rumored to be headed to Arista after breaking ties with EMI. A source told the Post, "Whitney was bleeped. She and Mariah got into a battle a couple of years ago and she won't stand for Mariah being on the same label. She's the diva at Arista - not Mariah." January 24, 2002 - AP has more on the war of words following the EMI statement that Mariah was 'terminated' from the record company, drawing the ire of Carey's lawyer Marshall Grossman. The two parties had crafted a more friendly release indicating the breakup was amicable with EMI's new chairman, Alain Levy, saying, "We have decided that this is the most prudent course of action for EMI. We wish Mariah the best." Carey's carefully crafted comment was, "This is the right decision for me. I look forward to the many new and exciting opportunities, which have now been presented to me. January 24, 2002 - Following news that Mariah Carey had been bought out by EMI and the psychotic, homophobic, racist, misogynist verbal rant by Mike Tyson at Lennox Lewis following a 'unrehearsed' press conference brawl, Howard Stern suggested Wednesday morning that a dream date would be Mariah and Iron Mike, since "she's pretty wacky herself."

January 24, 2002 - Foxnews.com's Roger Friedman reports Mariah Carey's attorney Marshall Grossman has blasted EMI for announcing the $28 million payout of Mariah's contract without their permission. Grossman said, "This is a blatant violation of the agreement. We are now exploring our options. We are disappointed that EMI would disregard terms of an agreement reached less than 24 hours ago. The joint statement was negotiated over several days. It was unmistakably clear that we would do this together. EMI's release seems just like a testimonial to Alain Levy (Chairman and CEO of EMI)." January 23, 2002 - It's official. Reuters is reporting Mariah Carey was axed by record company EMI on Wednesday with a $28 million pay-off, as the British music group decided it could not justify her huge contract after a dismal year for the company. Read more.

January 23, 2002 - The New York Post reports Mariah Carey is on the verge of signing a $30 million severance agreement with EMI. A source told the Post, "The long-term potential losses [for EMI] were huge." They say that Carey is likely to sign with Arista where her pal and ex Virgin exec Nancy Berry currently works.

January 22, 2002 - Billy Masters reports that he hears Mariah's new film, Wisegirls, is not terrible. His contacts at Sundance say Mariah was 'remarkably credible' as part of the cast.

January 22, 2002 - The Factor with Bill O'Reilly had entertainment writer Genie Wolf on the show Monday where they talked about some of the disappointing acts of 2001. Included was talk about Michael Jackson's weak sales of Invincible, Mariah Carey's movie flop in 'Glitter', and the lack of interest on the unauthorized Madonna biographies. Wolf said Mariah wasn't really to blame for the Glitter flop, "I went to see that movie, I was angry, not because I spent $7.50 but angry because Mariah Carey is a great talent and got no support whatsoever. The script was nonsense, the costumes were bad. They didn't even make her look good. They didn't give her great songs to sing."

January 22, 2002 - Aaron Pollock of TheZipper.org posted his thoughts on Mariah Carey today making some eye-raising charges against the singer, including rumors of Mariah having two illegitimate children born of street bums and having sex with the editor-in-chief of the charts to spring her debut 'Visions of Love'." January 21, 2002 - FHM had Mariah Carey on their cover last month and now the interview has been archived online. Mariah talks about the harrassment from the tabloids following her release from her psychiatric care saying, "They followed me everywhere I went - outside my mother's house, outside my apartment. I would try to go and get something to eat, try to be 'normal', and these tabloid things would happen. It's tough trying to be normal while having a telephoto lens shoved up your ass." Read more.

January 18, 2002 - Liane Bonin of Entertainment Weekly spoke with industry insiders about what the singer needs to do to recapture her pre-'Glitter' popularity. A marketing exec at a EMI rival said, "We aren't idiots in this field. It happens all the time that, once they're stars, musicians believe they're right and everyone else is full of sh--. That works if you have good taste, like Madonna. But from what we've been seeing, Mariah doesn't. My first tip for her is, start listening to the overpaid yoyos who give you advice." Read more.

January 18, 2002 - Vinnie Favale again was on with Howard Stern on Thursday morning to play clips of Mariah Carey's messages on her web site to her 'lambs'. Vinnie had created a remix featuring Mariah talking over the music of Bruce Springsteen 'Jerry Maguire' song then they played the Happy New Year message as they made fun of the fact that Mariah has all these fan books with her own photos in them.

January 17, 2002 - Fametracker playfully condensed the People magazine year's 25 most intriguing personalities list into their own version, including the woman at #5, Mariah Carey. Fametracker jokes:

January 16, 2002 - The New York Post reports Mariah Carey made reporters at the Sundance Film Festival wait at least an hour and a half to interview her and her castmates from 'Wise Girls.'

January 16, 2002 - Roger Friedman of Foxnews.com spoke with Mariah Carey from the Sundance Film Festival where she addressed the fact that her new film 'Wise Girls' was a different role than in 'Glitter.' Mariah said, "Hello? Of course. I hope we don't compare it. But this was written as a gritty script, with this character written as a brassy, ballsy — what's another word for ballsy? — tough chick. My whole life I've been the class clown. But you only see me as Mariah Carey the singer dealing with serious issues. My life might as well be a party. Why mope about life? January 16, 2002 - Mariah Carey was the subject of Tuesday morning's Howard Stern Show where after playing clips of O.J. Simpson's trip to the Ground Zero trip to New York, Howard wondered if O.J. or Mariah were more crazy. After a break Howard played a bunch of clips off her MTV Cribs episode and laughed about her comments that her walls looked like candy. He also said he remembered one part when it appeared Mariah had taken her dog out of the dryer. Howard wondered why she likes looking at photos of herself that fans put together and laughed at her 'invitation' for her crazy fans to visit her in her apartment's guest room.

January 15, 2002 - Britain's Star reports Mariah Carey has refused to do a duet with rival Jennifer Lopez. Mariah said of the idea, "I'd rather share the stage with a pig – a duet with Jennifer and me ain't gonna happen."

January 15, 2002 - The cover story in this week's National Enquirer features what they term a 'bloated' Mariah Carey partying in Barbados where friends tell the tabloid they again are worried about her. An insider revealed, "One minute Mariah is in public looking on top of the world, and the next she looks as if she's lost her best friend. She seems to be drowning her pain in champagne and a ridiculously overactive social life." 

January 15, 2002 - Entertainment Tonight was on hand at the Sundance Film Festival to talk with Mariah Carey where the singer addressed rumors she and 'Wise Girls' co-star Mira Sorvino were fighting on the set. Sitting next to Mira, Mariah said, "People like to think that women are catty and can't get along."

January 15, 2002 - Foxnews.com's Roger Friedman watched the Wise Girls premiere at Sundance over the weekend and came away impressed with Mariah's role in the flick. Friedman says, "Even though she tends to wear skimpy outfits as usual, her line delivery is sharp and she manages to get the right laughs. She shows good comedic timing in places where you wouldn't expect her to get it right." As for the film, Friedman wasn't as impressed, "Unfortunately, Wise Girls is really awful, a terrible mob stereotype movie that pales considerably next to The Sopranos." Read more.

January 15, 2002 - In celebration of Valentine's Day, the February issue of Vibe put together a love connection feature that has Mariah Carey teamed up with Luther Vandross. They cite the 'Endless Love' duet in 1994 where Luther sings to Mariah, "There's only you in my life," while Mariah tells him, "You're every breath I take." While Luther is a yo-yo dieter, Mariah is a yo-yo personality, and both like eating out every night. But as for compatibility, "This relationship would last about as long as Glitter did in theaters."

January 12, 2002 - The Globe reports Mariah Carey's mother Pat Vian phoned Luis Miguel from the kitchen of her Westchester, New York home after Mariah had left the room to warn the Latin singer not to break her heart like he had last summer. A source revealed Vian said, "Stay away from my daughter! You want to put her back in the psycho ward?" adding, "You'd better not be playing games with my daughter's feelings again, or you'll have me to answer to this time!" Read more.

January 12, 2002 - Nick Moir of The Daily Telegraph profiled Mariah Carey and his thoughts on EMI possibly wanting to sever ties with the singer. Moir writes, "I would actually question whether, even at the ripe old age of 31, Carey is really past her sell-by date. She is far from a stereotypical pop star. Despite the best efforts of make-up artists, lighting engineers and even plastic surgeons, she has never been able to rely on her rather plain appearance to hold attention. January 11, 2002 - The Sun reports following Mariah Carey's bizarre behavior in Aspen over the holidays, Luis Miguel has dumped her for a second time. Mariah reportedly insisted the windows of her suite be blacked out even though it was midnight, also ordered humidifiers for her room, and offered $100 for other guests at the hotel to leave the jacuzzi she was in so she and Luis could be alone.

January 10, 2002 - The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Gemma Tarlach put out a guide Wednesday with odds on whether Mariah Carey will show this year whether she's still got it or doomed to be forgotten. Tarlach puts Mariah's odds for success at 3 to 1 saying, "The pop culture pantheon has room for only one downed diva at a time, and we've already got Whitney Houston." Read more.

January 10, 2002 - Gossipers on the E! Online message boards ripped Mariah Carey's appearance on MTV Cribs up Wednesday with eric5 posting, "That chic was medicated big time. The wallowing in the tub and stripping, the girl with one shoe story, and what was that about needing to not show us everything. She couldn't show her bedroom after she has shown us everything else and the kitchen sink?" zshortyckz added, "Who has that much money and washes their own laundry? Someone that's paranoid. Someone that doesnt want someone else washing their stuff. Same person who will get half naked and hop in the tub on MTV but wont let you see her bedroom. January 10, 2001 - Entertainment Tonight aired a brief preview clip of Mariah Carey's episode of MTV Cribs which debuted tonight where the ET host said, "Mariah gave her tour for MTV's 'Cribs dressed in a variety of daring ensembles. That's not surprising. She's most comfortable scantily clad." They followed that with Mariah's comment, "See, when I'm at home, I don't really wear clothes. I just wear boxers or [Mariah-ism] things of this nature. Do you like this?"

January 9, 2002 - Mariah Carey's rep Cindi Berger talked with the Chicago Sun Times' Bill Zwecker following news that EMI has denied plans to drop her client from their label. Berger said, "There were inaccurate reports in the media that the recording agreement between Mariah Carey and Virgin Records has been terminated. ...The contract remains in full force.''

January 9, 2002 - News.com.au has a huge profile of Mariah Carey's latest troubles and comments from friends who are speculating what has happened to the star who once hit number one with everything she released. Sheila Franks, an acting coach who has been helping Carey break into Hollywood revealed, "Mariah feels intense self-doubt. She is beautiful, but feels ugly. She is talented, but dislikes the sound of her own voice. She lives in a hell of her own making. Mariah has never really known who she is. She hides in her work and lets other people decide her identity for her, because she is scared to take a close look at her own feelings. But whenever she does, the insecurity overwhelms her." January 9, 2002 - Access Hollywood reports Mariah Carey's appearance on Ally McBeal Monday night did nothing to help the struggling show's ratings, as it got hammered by Fear Factor on NBC with 12 million viewers and Everybody Loves Raymond on CBS with 22 million viewers. Ally got a miserable 8 million viewers on FOX.

January 8, 2002 - EMI Group issued a brief statement in regards to rumors that Virgin has been looking to buy Mariah Carey out of her record contract saying, "EMI wishes to make clear that it has made no such payment or agreement." The struggling record company's stock price dropped 2.6% on the news though analysts said it was too early to throw in the towel on the singer. Brett Hucker, analyst at Merrill Lynch in London admits, "She had a great track record until last year. There's no reason why she can't get back on track with the next album, but it all depends on what cost pressure EMI is under." Read more.

January 8, 2002 - Cinema.com reports Lloyd Smith, a backing singer who often works with Mariah, revealed that Carey till haunted by her tumultuous childhood and feels guilt over her success. Smith said, "Her childhood is something she thinks about all the time. She feels guilty about being so successful when her siblings have had such a tough time. Alison became a drug addict and is now HIV positive. That still causes Mariah a lot of pain."

January 8, 2002 - The Times of London spoke with a major label executive in the UK on reports EMI was considering buying out Mariah Carey from her contract, as he revealed, "Unfortunately, the public is not as dim as the industry would like to think. They don’t just go out and blindly buy a new Mariah Carey album, or whatever. It’s got to be good, because so much music is being made in people’s bedrooms now for thirty quid. The budget for Michael Jackson’s album could have cleared the national debt in Argentina. That’s where the whole spiral goes completely crazy..." Read more.

January 8, 2002 - The Sun reports the reasoning behind EMI's statement that they've not paid off Mariah to dump her from their record deal was because the news was pressuring the company's stock. An insider at Virgin told Dominic Mohan, "She’s still with us at the moment but that could change. There is a lot of manoeuvring going on but talk of her being dropped is premature. The bosses were furious at all the speculation that they might splash out on such a huge severance deal." Read more

January 7, 2002 - The commercial previews on FOX for Monday's episode of Ally McBeal featuring Mariah Carey include her on the witness stand talking about how she loves the spotlight, and that in fact she actually brings a spotlight along with her wherever she goes. This perhaps is reference to reports after her breakdown by the Sun's Dominic Mohan showing photos with him and Mariah so bright and blinding they couldn't be used for print.

January 5, 2002 - According to a posting on the Mariah Carey official site message board, Vanessa Williams spoke with VH1 about the recent problems Mariah Carey has had in her attempt at acting and reports her label was trying to buy her out of her contract. Williams said, "I think it's because Mariah Carey jumped into things way too fast when she really hasn't had any acting experience before. She should've started off with smaller roles and worked her way up." As for the label problems, she said if reports that they want to buy her out of her contract, "She should really consider Mercury Records. That is the label I'm under and they stick by their artists no matter what happens." Read more.

January 2, 2002 - $50 million... That's the figure that the New York Post is reporting that lawyers of Mariah Carey and Virgin have hammered out to cut Mariah loose from her contract with the label. Mariah reportedly toasted the news while dining at the St. Regis hotel in Aspen. Mariah's rep didn't have much to add to the report as Cindi Berger said, "I don't know. I have not been able to reach Mariah's attorneys."
