Hilburn of the Los Angeles Times gave his thoughts on the recent moves
surrounding Mariah Carey and his feelings that the 'Glitter' movie and
album both flopping were no surprise. Hilburn said, "For all her record

across octaves, but she has shown little imagination in the use of it."

February 15, 2002 - IMDB
quotes Sheryl Crow talking about her thoughts of checking herself in for
professional help to deal with depression but she sought other was following
the press blowup that followed Mariah's similar move. Crow said, "There's
no handbook on becoming famous and successful and I'm a person who had
this overwhelming need to be right with the world and make sure everyone
is happy with me. I became totally sick of myself, I got tired of seeing
myself. I got tired of feeling that if I wasn't in a magazine that interest
in me was waning. Fame is a weird trip. It was really a mindblower. It
took a few trips to Mount Sinai for some psychiatric help. I'm not joking.
Had Mariah not had the incident that she had I would have fully checked
myself in but I just didn't want the press. In a funny way, visiting Kid
Rock was an important turnaround for me. I went to Detroit and it was so
much fun. It totally reminded of what it was like growing up - it was all
about Lynyrd Skynyrd and trucks and Budweiser and hanging out with your
friends and it was like, 'I remember now who I am.' Stevie was also instrumental.
She has been an awesome friend and influence on my life. There's nobody
like her. I feel really blessed."

signed. She'll have another run at the top, because she's a brilliant songwriter
and an amazing vocalist. I still think there were some good songs on Glitter.
They didn't perform up to her past record of radio airplay, but nobody
can have a perfect run. Even Madonna had periods of low acceptance. Mariah
will be back up there, there's no doubt." Read more.

Hiatt of Entertainment Weekly gave his thoughts on Mariah Carey's performance
of the National Anthem Sunday before the Super Bowl. Hiatt said, "[Mariah]
was remarkably restrained, with the diva resting comfortably in the low
end of her prodigious, oft-over-used vocal range (despite rumors to the
contrary, she did not appear to be lip-synching). The usually barely-dressed
singer even dug deep enough into her closet to find a tasteful blue dress
to wear, though she couldn't resist accessorizing with some seriously bling-blinging
jewelry." Read more.

Double reports Mariah Carey is not drawing interest from BMG labels Arista,
J and RCA, nor Sony and EMI despite the reports stating otherwise. The

which should mean a much lower payoff and one conditional on performance
and creative input from either label.
February 1, 2002 - Dave Ferman
of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram profiled the Mariah Carey contract buyout
with EMI and the source of the move, blaming it not on her personal problems,
but primarily the weaker sales. Ferman said, "At the heart of this decision
lies the troubling reality that the music industry at present does not
tolerate even one slip-up from its artists on the business end. A label
will put up with all sorts of unsavory/freakish/odd behavior as long as
the artist continues to sell records." Read more.

those fantastic vocal chords and bombard us with an album that has three
top 10 hits. Just like you used to do. Do a concert tour when you are a
little less tired and fed up with the world around you." Read more.
February 1, 2002 - Glenn
Gamboa of Newsday profiled the rise and fall of Mariah Carey and what she
needs to do to get back on top and challenge the Beatles for the most #1
songs of all time. Gamboa suggests, "Carey has to rely on constantly rolling
out enjoyable music to maintain her relationship with fans. That suffered
when she strayed too far from her mall-loving, Long Island roots, strutting
off in those unbuttoned Daisy Dukes and the bikini tops and cavorting with
Jay-Z. Much of her fan base put up a collective hand and said, "Girlfriend,
we cannot get down with that'." Read more.
