December 28, 2002 - Tom Sinclair
of Entertainment Weekly explains punk rock was all about deviance and transgression;
it was music made by and for malcontents and screw-ups, not something Sum
41 and blink-182 seem to live up to. Sinclair says "the most outrageous
punk attitude actually seems to be emanating from folks who no one would
ordinarily think about labeling punk." Amongst his examples are Whitney
Houston, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Christina Aguilera. Read more.

KARE11 Today in Minneapolis a few weeks ago that some thought she wasn't
wearing a thong or panties. The official word is that she was though. "Yeah,
she was wearing underwear," said an assistant to Carey's NYC PR woman before
her cell phone cut out. "She did not know she was going to be seated for
the interview, she was wearing a short skirt." At one point in the interview
they draped a coat over her lap. "We didn't know that I was coming to sit
up on a platform or I would have had a little bit of a longer dress," Carey
told KARE viewers and throngs of fans at the stage. Read more.

included bref sets by Mariah Carey, Kylie Minogue, Destiny's Child, Nick
Carter of the Backstreet Boys, Justin Timberlake of *NSYNC, Avril Lavigne,
Kelly Osbourne, Paul Oakenfold and the Goo Goo Dolls. Nichols says, "The
assortment of divas, crooners and sassy teens amounted to little more than
a few trinkets (and a lump of coal or two) wrapped up in a giant, flashy
package topped with cascades of glittery fake snow. Almost everyone mined
'80s music in some way, from pop to new wave to rock. But the more distressing
commonality among these disparate acts was a general inability to take
their slick favorites to the stage." Read more.

December 21, 2002 - Todd
Hyman of the Island Ear says Mariah Carey's 'Glitter' tops his DVD Best
list for 2002. He writes, "Despite the fact that 'Glitter' was clearly
the worst movie of the year, and Mariah Carey’s career was basically ruined
because of it, it turns out to be a funnier DVD than all three Austin Powers
movies multiplied by Buddy Hackett’s greatest hits. Here’s what you do:
Get a few cases of beer and tell all your friends that you’ve scored a
copy of 'Lagaan'. Then, when they all rush over because they love Indian
musicals, crack the beers and throw on the 'Glitter' DVD, featuring commentary
by director Vondie Curtis-Hall (yeah, he’s the guy who somehow managed
to be on both 'ER' and 'Chicago Hope'). Watch your friends erupt with laughter
and eventually declare you their new leader. Even if you don’t watch the
commentary or the music videos, the awfulness of the movie stands on its
own. I mean, how many other DVDs in your collection do you get to boo the
end?"

"With all the clowns I’ve come across in my life, how the hell could we
narrow it down to one?" He was rude about Carey, though, wasn't he? "For
him, I don’t think he was that rude. For him, that was mild," she said.

writes "There was a big change of news concerning Mariah Carey's second
Single off 'Charmbracelet'. Yesterday's article from FOX News kind of gave
it away, and today it is being confirmed both by MonarC and Team Mariah
- 'Boy (I Need You)' Ft. Cam'ron will be the second single released from
'Charmbracelet' scheduled for release early 2003. 'The One' is currently
on hold. I believe it was 2-3 weeks ago that I reported that the second
single would be 'The One' so I thought I'd clear that up. This decision
made by MonarC in my opinion was because 'Boy' is already on the R&B
charts with no promotion or single released yet. As soon as 'Charmbracelet'
was released, all of my local stations started to play 'Boy'."

to release 'Oh Boy' as the second single off 'Charmbracelet'. Friedman
suggested 'My Saving Grace', his favorite track, but Carey said while that
will likely be released as a single eventually, "right now, I want something
upbeat." As for troubled diva Whitney Houston, Carey didn't feel comfortable
offering the singer advice. "I don't want to sound condescending," Carey
said, choosing her words carefully. "It's not like she needs advice from
me. She's been a big influence on me and I consider her a friend. I want
her to be happy." Read more.

and Jennifer Lopez. Hallowell says 'Charmbracelet' "did way better than
we expected." He explained, "It was weird 'cause no one knew how she'd
do. But at our midnight sale [last week], a lot of people showed up to
buy her record. And in one week, she has outsold Jennifer Lopez's [two-week-old]
album. Mariah isn't selling as well as she did at her peak, but she's doing

December 15, 2002 - Caralyn
Green of the Penn State Collegian reviewed Mariah Carey's new album 'Charmbracelet'
giving it a grade of 'D'. Green writes, "'Charmbracelet' does successfully
mend some of Glitter's overblown funk flaws with sparkling success but
still fails to fully utilize Carey's famous five-octave range. Carey whispers,
coos and sighs throughout the 15 tracks but leaves listeners yearning for
the assertive and guttural wailings of earlier works. In refusing to flow
with her phenomenal talent, Carey seems to deliberately guard herself from
criticism." Read more.

told a Dallas Morning News photographer. "Mariah is all about the [breasts]."
The singer wasn't prepared for a close-up either. "Don't get too close
... I'm tired," she yells. Then, seeing the larger lense, Carey freaked,
"That lens is humongous! What do you need that for? So you can get even
closer?" Read more.

December 8, 2002 - Phoebe
Reilly of the New York Post wonders with the recent releases from Jennifer
Lopez and Mariah Carey, and the upcoming Whitney Houston release on Tuesday,
which of the three is the biggest diva of all. Alan Light, former editor
in chief of Spin magazine remarked, "I suppose you could make a case for
all three as legitimate divas. But I think the combination of God-given
vocal gift and erratic behavior make Mariah and Whitney much truer [divas]
than Jenny. 'Diva' should mean a larger-than-life, dramatic, in some way
outrageous, and indisputably talented, star." He added, "'Diva' is the
most overused, devalued term in entertainment. J.Lo seems a little too
professional, a little too together, and a little too vocally limited to
really qualify, no matter how big a star she is." Read more.

that very, very public meltdown -- it's no wonder Mariah has retreated
to a safe haven on this 15-song effort. But after listening to yet another
bland collection of silky, overblown ballads and forgettable featherweight
hip-hop, it's hard not to wonder if she's playing it too safe." Read more.

popular on the alternative circuit, is confounded as to why the Charmbracelet
singer doesn't date him. And he believes that since Mariah has had a breakdown,
they would make perfect partners. Adams says, "There's a couple of these
choice Mariah Carey tracks where I'm like so convinced that she's just
the bomb. She's the best. I don't know why she doesn't date me, man. Mariah
Carey would have a perfectly good time dating me. I mean, she went crazy,

Carey's imminent 'Charmbracelet' as her bid for a pop comeback, Carey begs

December 1, 2002 - Jim Farber
of the New York Daily News reviewed Mariah Carey's latest effort 'Charmbracelet',
and little of his comments were positive. Farber said, "In general, the
singer doesn't write firm melodies but fashions her songs around her meandering
phrasing, the better to showcase the furthest range of her vocals. It's
a show-offy approach that has damaged not only Carey's art but the culture
at large. As one of the most commercial and influential singers of the
last decade, Carey has ruined an entire generation of singers, making them
believe it's the height of talent to impersonate a 'Star Search' contestant."
