March 15, 2005 - Edna Gundersen
of USA Today took part in an online chat with readers on Tuesday and one
poster alleged that an "entertainment" reporter at the cable news network
they worked for was offered cash if they promised to hype up the new Mariah
Carey album 'The Emancipation of Mimi'. Skeptics would suggest that Carey's
legion of haters took advantage of the anonymous nature of the USA Today
chats to smear the diva. Nevertheless, Gundersen responded, "Ex-squeeze
me? Yes, you absolutely should be sick about it. And disgusted and outraged.
Maybe I'm Pollyanna, but I hope this doesn't happen often. I'm suprised
to hear it happens at a 'major cable news network', where I would assume
serious ethics policies would be in place. Perhaps you'd care to take this
matter up with your managers? Ick, gag me (and please, email me with further
details, if you're so inclined). As for Mariah's habit of enlisting rappers,
it's all about desperate efforts to broaden her reach. I'm sure we'll see
the usual parade of name-brand guest stars and slutty get-ups, whatever
it takes to get the cameras pointed her way." Read the entire chat here.
