There's something foul about Jennifer Lopez's new perfume line.
At least that's what a Los Angeles manufacturer of lotions, soaps and other pretty-scented things says in a lawsuit filed Wednesday against the forever-diversifying diva.
At issue is the name of J.Lo's forthcoming fragrance: Glow by J.Lo.
In the lawsuit, the aggrieved party--one Glow Industries--says Lopez and her perfume partner, Coty Inc., infringed on its trademark by going with the "glow." The complaint seeks to bar J.Lo from invoking the intransitive verb for her eau de toilette. It also seeks unspecified damages.
Glow Industries' Glow perfumes (established 1999) are sold nationwide in department stores such as Nordstrom. Glow by J.Lo, launched with a blow-out Trump World Tower bash last month, is due to be rolled out in September.
Arthur Aaronson, attorney for the non-J.Lo Glow, says he informed the J.Lo Glow of the same-name situation in a letter on July 3, the day after the Trump to-do. J.Lo's camp responded with a no-go: It was--and is--going ahead with Glow, it said.
No comment today from Coty (which is also doing a perfume line with Lopez's fellow pop diva Celine Dion). A call to J.Lo's fragrance-line flack was not returned.
Clearly, Lopez feels an attachment to the word glow. In a 1998 Movieline interview, the singer-actress-everything declared, "I have the 'stardom glow.' "
It appears to run in the family. Lopez's younger sister Linda hosts a show on E!'s sibling network, style., name of, yes, Glow.
Lopez's foray into the fragrance biz follows forays into the clothing biz, the restaurant biz (Pasadena, California's Madre) and the music biz (most recently, J to Tha L-O: The Remixes). Despite all this activity, she actually still manages to act--working next on Jersey Girl, a Kevin Smith comedy with her current tabloid beau Ben Affleck.
The perfume lawsuit makes for a busy summer in the court system for the 32-year-old. On July 25, she formally filed for divorce from her husband of less than one year, dancer/choreographer Cris Judd. At least that matter appeared to be headed to a quick resolution: Lawyers said a financial settlement has already been worked out.
No if only she can get her glow in order...
