Colombian gems head of class for MTV Latin noms

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Colombian superstars Juanes and Shakira and Argentinean artist Diego Torres lead the nominees for the inaugural MTV Latin Video Music Awards with five mentions each.
Chilean rockers La Ley and Mexican pop star Paulina Rubio follow with four nominations, while Babasonicos, Catupecu Machu, Enrique Iglesias, Kinky and Alejandro Sanz each have three mentions.
The event will be hosted by Argentine TV and radio personality Mario Pergolini and Mexican actor Diego Luna. Manâ€¡, Shakira and System of a Down have been confirmed to perform. The event will be broadcast live from Miami Beach's Jackie Gleason Theatre on Oct. 24.
Competing for the coveted artist of the year honor are Juanes, La Ley, Sanz, Shakira and Torres.
Up for video of the year are Iglesias ("Hero," directed by Joseph Kahn), Juanes ("A Dios Le Pido," directed by Gustavo Garzâ€”n), Rubio ("Si TÅ“ Te Vas," directed by the Brothers Strause), Shakira ("Suerte," directed by Francis Lawrence) and Torres ("Color Esperanza," directed by Eduardo Pinto y Nahuel Lerena).
"This is the first event that truly showcases what's popular to young people in Latin America and gives us a platform to celebrate the region's trends with musical reverence and pop culture irreverence," said Charlie Singer, senior vp programming and production at MTV Networks Latin America.
The winner for each of the 17 categories will be chosen by fans who will cast their vote exclusively online at MTV Latin America's Web site, http://www.mtvla.com, between Saturday and Oct. 6.
