Shakira sweeps MTV Latin nods; La Ley nabs two

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Colombian crossover pop star Shakira led the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards Latin America with five wins, including artist of the year, video of the year, female artist of the year, pop artist of the year and best artist-North.
The singer took the trophy for each category in which she was nominated. She beat out Enrique Iglessias, Paulina Rubio, Alejandro Sanz (news) and Diego Torres for the pop artist of the year honors and also was named best artist from the North.
Chilean alternative rock group La Ley followed with two wins: rock artist of the year and best group or duo.
The event was held Thursday night at the Jackie Gleason (news) Theater in Miami Beach, Fla., and broadcast live on MTV Latin America and MTV2.
TV and radio personality Mario Pergolini and Mexican actor Diego Luna hosted.
Torres and Colombian singer-songwriter Juanes, who also had five nominations, each took home one award. Juanes was named male artist of the year, and Argentine star Torres was honored as best artist from the Southeast.
Arista recording artists Avril Lavigne (news) and Pink also received awards -- for best new artist international and best pop artist international, respectively. Alternative rock veterans Red Hot Chili Peppers were honored as the best international rock artist over Coldplay, Linkin Park, No Doubt and System of a Down.
Manu Chao was named alternative artist of the year. Other winners included Bandana, Libido, DJ Mendez and Sin Bandera.
