Cubby (that's the DJ's name): Justin Timberlake is here!
J: I don't get a headset
C: Do you like my headset?
J: I don't get a headset
C: yeah, I want to be a sportscaster so, i have this..
J: well, good luck
C: Too bad this isn't TV 'cause you'd see my head set ladies and gentlemen. I've got a cool head set w/ a microphone attached.
J: I think it's better for everybody at home that this isn't TV, Cubby
Cubby: What because of me? Are you dissin' me? After all these years?
J: I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. No, because of me. I don't know.
C: Yeah OK (laughs).
J: I don't know.
C: We're live! Justin Timberlake and our live studio audience! (screams) And we've got the next oh 4 or 5 hours...
J: They're very well behaved. Very well-behaved.
C: Yeah they're very well behaved. What is it with you? I mean around me they're like acting all crazy throwing stuff at me. With you they're like Oh Justin's here.
J: I don't know.
C: Finally, what's up w/ the bling-bling? Good lord I have like a Swatch watch and look at this watch.
J: I don't know. I don't know. It's just...I don't know man!
C: You look good!
J: It's just a watch. Thank you sir!
C: Justin Timberlake is back ladies and gentlemen and uh you have a new CD coming out. I do believe...Now CD dates change all the time. You know, they move them around a lot. Are we still set for Nov 5?
J: Nov 5
C: Justified?
J: Justified
C: What kind of preparation has gone into this new CD?
J: Well um. I mean obviously I spent the whole first half of the Summer writing the record uh with the "select producers" (funny voice) and uh the second half was really abt the production and mixing the record so that they came out the way that they were thought about.
C: Now we still have over a month away until the CD comes out. Are you done yet?
J: It's done.
C: Wow it's done.
J: It's done. It's actually being mastered today.
C: Today, aahhh. Congratulations.
J: Thank you sir.
C: Actually rumor has we have clips from the CD that we're going to play. We can't play the whole song
for legal reasons.
J: Yes. I've brought some clips. I brought The Clipse on the first song but I actually brought some clips with me (laughter).
C: Now how come we can't play the whole songs? Tell everybody the legal reason.
J: I guess it's because of Napster.
C: Well yeah true, all the Internet...
J: That's a record company thing man. I don't know, I just write the songs. I don't know all that.
C: (laughs). Hey like I love You was produced and cowritten by the Neptunes. Tell everybody who the Neptunes really are and how good they really are cause some people don't know how good they really are.
J: They're amazing. Amazing musicians. Uh I guess I think everybody knows that they did Girlfriend you know that we just heard. Um but they ended up doing the biggest portion of the record. They did seven songs with me on the record and just all live like Like I Love You. And um incredible musicians. Incredible. Incredible.
C: What makes them so good though?
J: Um well first of all they understand groove. They understand how to get a pocket, uh a groove better than anybody that I know. Uh and second of all the melody. Like Pharrell is a really um he's very involved uh in the melody and he has a good sense of melody. Same thing w/ Timbaland though, I mean his beats are incredible.
C: Now Clipse is the rapper on Like I Love You.
J: Both of them.
C: Yeah, are they both featured on many more tracks on the CD?
J: There are features. That's the only one The Clipse are on. There are other features. Bubba Sparxx, Janet Jackson. Uh there's this new girl by the name of Vanessa Marquez (sp?). I don't even think she has a deal but I just loved her voice so much I just wanted to put her on the record.
C: Well something tells me with an endorsement like that she might have a deal in about a month!
J: No doubt. If she doesn't right now then she definately will cause she's incredible.
C: If you just tuned in this is Z100 and we're live w/ Justin Timberlake with our live studio audience. Give it up for you guys for winning. And if you want to talk to Justin 1 800 -24200100. We've got to take some phone calls cause some people aren't as lucky as you guys and gals hanging out w/ Justin Timberlake. Your VMA performance by the way was absolutely amazing, give it up for that. (cheers) Justin was that really your first solo performance. Like in front of that many people.
J: Well yeah. I was more nervous abt the 80 something million people at home. So yeah, I was excited though. I was excited. I think for the most part though my main concern was that I didn't want to do something over the top. I didn't want the performance to take over what the song was. Just because nobody had heard the song yet.
C: Now I'm sure when you go out on stage you don't get nervous anymore, because you had the group usually. But are you back to kind of getting nervous again being by yourself?
J: Yeah a little bit, it's something totally different. I mean obviously I had dancers up there but I mean they get like paid to dance. So you have to be like extra good.
C: Exactly
J: It was fun though. I had a really good time.
C: But did you like keep looking around like hey where's Chris? Where's JC? Where the Hell did everybody go?
J: Yeah, yeah yeah. Exactly
C: Because it's wierd right now interviewing you. I've interviewed you I don't know ten times.
J: It's much more organized. Without Chris.
C: Without Chris. I was gonna say. Cause Chris is throwing paper airplanes usually at us and bubblegum.
J: Can actually get something done!
C: Well should we play the track that we've already played oh a couple of million times already?
J: If you'd like, if they'd like. Would you like? (screams)
C: Would you like to hear Like I Love You? Are you ready? Alright, Justin Timberlake. It is live on Z100.
Like I Love You.
J: Yeah. It's just Justin. I'm just kiddin.
C: From Justified. Coming out on Nov 5. You gotta buy it.
(LILY played)
C: Justin Timberlake live on Z100. I'm Cubby and our live studio audience is here! That is LILY and during the song everyone was asking hey can you sing acapella, can you do some beat box? But you have a cold you can't sing acapella.
J: Um
C: What do you want to do. Do you want to beat box or sing acapella Justin Timberlake?
J: I'll do both. (screams) Uh what do you want me to sing?
C: Pick a song, any song.
J: LILY? Do you want to sing LILY w/ me? Starts to sing "Ain't nobody loves ya like...."
C: Now...
J: Hey wait I made a promise (starts to beatbox)
C: There you go, a little beatboxing Justin Timberlake. You know in addition to our live studio audience we're going to take some questions from you guys don't worry but we also have some people that couldn't be here so the least I could do is take their phone call.
J: That's the least you could do.
C: We got Jenna on line 6. Jenna, you're on the air w/ Justin Timberlake.
Jenna: Hi
J: Hi
Jenna: Uh how are you?
J: I'm good how are you?
Jenna: Great. I can't wait for your new CD.
J: sorry you only get one question. That's it. No I'm kidding.
Jenna: W/ you being in Nsync for 7 years are you nervous to become a new artist on the scene? Cause you're such a pro at it.
J; Well thank you dear. Yeah a little nervous. I think when I was writing the record I think that I just kind of, I really didn't think too much about what I was writing or the style that it was. But I think after I got it done and as it gets closer to the album release time I get a little bit nervous cause obviously I want everybody to like it. You know.
Jenna: Are you excited abt it?
J: Yeah. I really excited. I think it's gonna, I think it's something different. I think it's something totally different.
Jenna: Do the guys like the CD?
J: Yeah, yeah. They like it. They like it.
C: Thank you for the call, I appreciate it. Let's go to line 8. Uh is this Beshara (sp?)
J: That's a cool name
B: Thank you. Hey Justin I heard you did a song w/ Janet Jackson how did that come abt?
J: Well I did. The rumors are true I did a song w/ Janet Jackson. The way that came about was after I finished writing the song, the chorus that I had written, the hook, actually I had written it from a girl's perspective and she was the first person I thought of because I wanted a girl to sing the part and so I played her the song and she liked the song and we did the song.
B: Do you think it's gonna be a single?
J: I don't know. I don't know. You know you never know what's gonna be a single you kind of have to wait until the album comes out and see what people are really feeling.
B: Well that would be a cool video to see you guys dance together.
J: It would be cool.
B: Well I love you and I'm a Janet fan. Hi Janet.
C: (high voice) "Hi how are you?" I'll play the part of Janet. That's me Cubby. Thanks for your call.
J: You're an idiot. But I mean in a good way. In a loving way I say that.
C: Dude. You'd better be nice to me, I'm the guy that plays the records. OK. God I hate that LILY song.
Hey Tatiana, line 4. Tatiana you're on w/ JT.
T: Hello, Hi Justin, OMG, Hi I'm sorry.
J: Hi
T: I'm gonna breathe
J: What are you sorry for?
T: I just want to tell you I think you're one of the most wonderful people in the world. I don't know what to say. You're one of the most awesome people in the world. Tati calm now. I'm not one of those crazy fans.
C: Oh yeah you are.
T: I just want to tell you that I love you so much and I just want to wish you the best (something) ever. Tomorrow's my BD.
J: Tomorrow's your BD? Happy early BD.
T: (squeals) Thank you! I just want to say that I love you so much Justin and I just want to let you know that I'm a fan who cares and I just want to always go Oh Justin, Justin, when everybody else goes...I just want you to know that I'm here to be your friend and I just want to tell you that I love you so much...
C: She's gone. Just let her talk.
T: I'm sorry, I'm a little bit of a talker...
J: That's alright. That's alright.
C: What's your question for Justin?
T: What? Uhmm....
J: I think she just wanted to say good luck.
C: Oh that's cool.
T: Uhm.. question...um.....Are you going on tour?
J: I'm sorry...
T: Are you going on tour?
J: I would love to. I would love to.
T: I want to be there. I would love to go. OK I'm not crazy, I'm just...
C: We love you thanks for your call.
T: We love you, thank you, this was the best day of my life, and the best BD present in the world.
C: And what radio station gave you JT?
T: Z100! I love you.
J: And happy...
C: I've always got to get that in there.
J: You gotta love that
C: Hey we have some clips from the CD in the studio.
J: Yes. Cool.
C: And we're going to play them right now.
J: OK
C: And I heard we can't play too long of the clip or I'll get fined.
J: You'll get fined?
C: Yeah yeah
J: Wow, this is all news to me.
C: Yeah yeah. So this first track I believe is...I haven't heard it. Put it on right now. This is called "Senorita"?
J: This is called Senorita. Did it with the Neptunes. Got kind of a little latin hip hop thing going on.
(plays song)
C: I'm diggin it.
J: Don't start dancin Cubby. That's what I'm talking about. It's good that we're in the studio, not on television.
C: There you go, there's a clip from Justified, doesn't come out until Nov 5, but Z100 bringing it, Justin Timberlake and we have another clip we're going to play for you and whatever comes up you tell me what it is. It's like a Name That Tune for JT. Here we go. They're in the studio cueing it up. I'm on the edge of my seat. Comes out Nov 5.
J: (whispers) Here it comes...
C: Alright what's this Justin?
J: Oh, this is called Cry Me A River.
C: I think I've hear abt this one.
J: Yeah.
C: Could be another...
J: (opera voice starts). That's not me. That's a sample. This song...I think this is a ground-breaking song. The production that Timbaland did on this song is absolutely incredible. Hot beat right? You like the beat?
C: I like the beat. I'm afraid to dance cause you'll yell at me.
J: No I won't yell at you, you can dance.
C: But what's it like to be listening to this and watching people react for the first time cause they have'n
t heard it.
J: It's cool. It's cool. You can tell that they're soaking it up.
C: OK that's called Cry...
J: It's called Cry Me a River. Yeah.
C: JT from Justified. On LILY, dude the dance moves are incredible. Michael Jackson definately the inspiration there? I know you've heard that a hundred times by the way you're probably sick of it.
J: Uh, I think this whole generation, I think Michael has influenced Britney, I think Michael has influenced Nelly. I would be a fool to say that Michael has not influenced me. I used to run around when I was like 4 or 5 years old w/ a big afro wig on singing (starts singing) "ABC...easy as 123". You know I thought I was Michael.
C: Did you grab your crotch at 4 years old?
J: Uh, no. Not at 4. That was at 5 years old.
C: JT live on Z100. Do we have any more clips we can play off the CD? I'm gonna check in the studio. Oh, we're done. They won't let us play any more. Oh man so you gotta buy the CD. It comes out Nov 5. It's called Justified.
J: There you go.
C: I wonder why it's called Justified.
J: Umm...
C: Of course, your name in there...
J: Well that actually had nothing to do with it. I just um, the way that the CD title came to me is...actually one of the dancers when we were rehearsing for the video for LILY he said you should change your name to Justified and he was just joking around and I said well why do you say that and he said well it seems like every time you do something you have a reason. You know you don't just do music to do it. I don't know I kinda thought about it and it just makes sense to me cause I really enjoy connecting with people on that level. I enjoy being able to write or sing something for them that kinda makes them...you feel the connection between 2 people and it kinda makes them forget abt everyday life, you know. Um, I don't know...it's cool.
C: That's deep, deep, very deep, deep.
J: That's deep. I'm a deep person you know what I mean?
C: Justin Timberlake is hangin out on Z100. My boy Scotty B. Hey go out in the audience and get some questions. Alright raise your hand if you have a question.
J: If you're sure...
C: If you're sure. Give us your name and what's your question.
Christina: My name's Christina from Bedford. That talking girl asked my question.
C: Oh that talking girl, the one that kept yqpping.
J: The one w/ the BD.
C: Exactly. But you wished her a happy BD. You made her day, that's all that matters. What's your name. What's your question?
Lindsay: My name is Lindsay from Manville and I just want to know like I know that you're really into your fans and everything and it's not really question but I just have to tell you that I waited for this for 5 years (starts to cry).
J: Aaww...
L: OMG I said I wasn't going to be one of those girls, I'm sorry. But like...
C: You're total TRL man!
L: I know. Like I just have to tell you that I know people say to you all the time they're you're biggest fan. I respect everything you do...
J: Thank you!
L:... and I just think that you are the greatest person and just OMG...
J: Wow
L: ...And everybody from Manville loves you and Jenna right here and all my friends at home.
J: Hello
J:... Jess and Anna and Kate. They love you too. I wish I could have brought everybody and I'm sorry I'll stop...But I just wanted to tell you ...
J: Thank you so much!...Thank you.
L: ...that for 5 years that I've waited for this moment and like most people anticipate their wedding day but my life is made like you don't even know...
J: Whoaa...
C: What if he proposed to you?
L: This is all I have to say right here is like I don't care if you think I'm scary or not but like....whatever..
J: No no not at all.
L; But like magazines, TV have got me nowhere, being the 100th caller...I don't know
J: I'm glad you got to be here, I'm glad I got to be here with you.
C: What radio station got you here?
L: Z100!
J: But like if you were at TRL you have to scream at the end like "Wwwhhooo!"
C: We made mention of a solo tour. Gonna happen or not?
J: I mean I would love to, I would love to. I'm gonna plan on it.
C: But we're talking not until next year probably.
J: No probably not until next year. Well I mean it is kinda the end of the year when I'm releasing so yeah. I think we'll see how the release goes hopefully that will go well. Keep my fingers crossed. And...
C: Now are you one of those people when the album comes out Nov 5th the next day will be running into the record label going "How did we do? How did our first day do?"
J: Um, I'm not really, I don't know, I think there's a little anticipation on what exactly it's going to sound like
I'm anxious to get people's reaction on the sound because it's totally different from everything they've ever heard me do with Nsync. And I think you can tell that w/ LILY. That was a total departure from the sound of Nsync so..I mean, I just want people to like it.
C: Hey line 4 I'm going to check in w/ Jamie.
Jamie: Yes it is
J: What up? What up?
C: Jamie you are on w/ JT on Z100.
Jamie: Hi Justin.
J: whassup, whassup?
Jamie: I just saw you the other day at 106 & Park, man. I'd like to know when the next time we're going to see you perform live is going to be?
J; Oh, good question
C: Good question because until the album comes out when can people see it on TV
J: I don't know sweetheart...
C: Leno, Letterman, nothing booked yet?
J; Nothing's been booked yet. Hopefully like Leno...
C: Can I ask you a question on the spot?
J: Yeah sure totally.
C: Cause you've already dogged me twice during the interview. You already said I can't dance...
J: I'm not dogging you, man...
C: Will you come to Z100's Jingle Ball and do one song at least?
J: When is it?
C: I mean how can you say no to Z100 NY Madison Square Garden Dec 12? I'm asking you now as a friend.
J: Dec 12th?
C: Dec 12! Can you look into it?
J: Yeah.
C: Just do one song.
J: Oh if my schedule is free I'll be here.
C: You heard it here ladies and gentlemen! Alright? We're going to work on it. Dec 12th Z100 Jingle Ball.
J: Have your people call my people. No, I'm just kidding...
C: Hey have you gotten any advice from former boy band stars like Joey McIntyre went solo from NKOTB, Johnny Gill. Have they said anything to you.
J: No
C: Not that you need it. But you never know.
J: No. The last time I ran into Joe McIntyre was...
C: During a fight?
J: No. I don't even remember it.
C: But what is the formula for success for life after being in a huge boy band.
J: I don't think there's a certain formula for being in a huge boy band period. I just think that I never honestly expected Nsync to go as far as it did. You can't fathom something being that successful. I think what makes it what it is is how genuine it is and I think people can tell that we love what we do and I think that makes a big difference. I think you can tell when somebody's up there and they don't really feel like they should be there. I've heard people say how they've waited for this moment and those are moments that I've waited for my whole life ever since I was 3 years old. I knew that this is what I wanted to do and I think that's the formula for success. I think when people know that you enjoy it they enjoy it just as much.
(the interview paused here for a break)
C: Oh now they all have questions. It's amazing how one sparks now all the hands to be raised. What's your name and what's yourquestion?
W: Hi my name is Whitney and my question is about the song-writing process. Lyrics first, music first, at a keyboard, with a guitar?
J: I think song-writing is...you know what's so funny abt song-writing...I don't actually feel like I'm doing it when I'm doing it. This may sound like some deep thing again but it's kind of like a meditation. I kind of feel like somebody's sitting beside me telling me what to write down. Each song that I write how ever it comes, you just take it. You know, it's a blessing. Most songs that I write are inspired by melody. I think that's like the most important part. But for instance Gone was inspired... I just started playing that progression on the guitar and that's what inspired the melody which is what inspired the idea for the song.
C: By the way how is the guitar playing coming along? Didn't you take lessons for a while or you gave up and now you taught yourself?
J: I took lessons when I was a kid. I took lessons when I was like 13 or 14 and I kind of gave up on that it was just so boring. I'm going to teach myself how to do it!
C: Justin Timberlake hanging out with us on Z100. Our studio audience is here. give us a TRL yell (screams).
Yeah that's the way to do it. And you know me being the music guy I wanted to talk mainly abt your CD and we've done that for a good 30 mins.
J: Uh oh what does that mean?
C: But guess what? Time to talk personal folks. Cause I'll get in trouble if I don't ask the obvious questions.
J: Whatever...
C: Who ya dating Justin?
J: Me. I'm dating, I'm not dating, I'm dating around, yeah everybody.
C: Tell us abt Alyssa Milano, any seriousness to it?
J: I'm dating everybody.
C: In other words he's dating Alyssa Milano. I know that answer Justin.
J: OK Maybe a little bit. OK...
C: But the Janet Jackson thing was definately a rumor?
J: Maybe it was.
C: Oh! See he's making you think!
J: I'm not going to give you anything, man! You could grill me, you could tie me up and beat me I'm not going to...
C: Some of these girls might want to do that
J: Hey! Hey!
C: You know I also like to start rumors to see how quickly they make it to magazines.
J: OK let's start one.
C: Is it true you're dating one of the Olsen twins but not sure which one it is?
J: Can we not start that rumor?
C: No let's start a rumor and I want to see if it makes it into like J-14 in a couple of weeks.
J: Let's start um, let's start, who can I be dating?
(girls in the audience say "me!")
J: Your name is Justine?
C: Justin and Justine! Alright I like that!
J: I'm dating Justine.
C: Alright I like that, you heard it here first. Have you had a chance to talk to Lance lately about the whole space thing?
J: I haven't but he's back over there.
C: Yeah why don't you give him $20 million or how ever much he needs? Give a brother a loan!
J: I'll give him as much money as I have.
C: Have you had a chance to talk to him much though?
J:The last time I talked to him, I talked to him about a month ago and you know I know it hits the press every other week he's going, he's not going, he's going, he's not going. Last that I heard you know and this is what I would asume is that $20 million you can't just ship over by Fedex. You know I'm sure you have to get it in portions and the last I heard he was training to go up on a mission. I don't know if it's the one coming up or if it's the one after that. I mean they do missions kind of every 6 months don't they?
C: Something like that. Well the Russians are different. They're wacko over there . OK what about Joey in Rent? Have you seen him yet?
J: Oh, have you seen it? He, honestly, you know me I'm really skeptical when it comes to like performing and I was ready to bash him. I was just ready to just give it to him. He really shocked me and I thought he was so amazing, really took on the part of it's Mark right? He really took on the part and you know I had seen the play before and I thought he was better than the guy that I saw that had obviously been doing it for 6 months. I was blown away. I thought Joey was amazing.
C: Alright now what abt Chris and his fashion?
J: Chris and his fashion?
C: Yeah, did you talk to him...Is he doing that on the side now?
J: I don't know, I don't know. I know Chris has been working a lot, doing a lot of song writing. I think that's great. I think JC as well.
C: He's dabbling in electronica I heard.
J: Yeah, yeah. Doing some stuff w/ BT. Doing some stuff on the Internet I heard. I don't know though. It's all good though. I mean it's great for when we get together to do the next record, I think. Everybody's going to be that much more developed and ...can't wait.
C: Well I know we got to let you go in a second because I want you to meet all of our Z100 listeners. Justin Timberlake's hanging out. So the quicker we wrap up the interview the more time you have with them. Any more questions though I don't want anybody mad at me. We have way too many questions I'm going to get to, so Scotty B, the person right next to you has a question.
fan: Hello. Do you like my doll?
C: It's like a naked doll.
J: Do I like your doll? He looks butt-naked.
fan: He lost his shorts. It's supposed to be you. My brother gave him to me.
J: aaawww....
fan: I just want to say that you're really cool because one night supposedly it was you, you might have been at the China Club?
J: Right. I probably was.
fan: And I had a friend who was there and he called me and you actually got on the phone and said hello to me...
J: Yeah yeah, I remember. That was you?
fan: You're lying.
J: He was there. Trace was there.
fan: really? And do you remember what you sang to me?
J: I'm not a lyer.
fan: Do you remember what you sang to me? Do you rember what you sang?
J: No I don't remember that. What did I sing?
fan: You sang a little bit of Girlfriend for me but I didn't believe it was you...
J: Oh that's right because you said "It's not you!"
fan: But I think that's really cool that you would randomly talk to a girl like me.
J: Cool
C: Awww! Give it up for Justin Timberlake. What a sweetheart!!
J: I'm not going to tell her how much her brother paid me. No, just kidding, just kidding.
C: Before we go fill in the blank, a 4th Nsync album will blank happen.
J: Definately happen.
C: A final word to the fans?
J: Thanks for coming and I hope you all like the record.
C: And we'll see you at Jingle Ball Dec. 12?
J: Possibly!
