this is someones review of the concert....... I got it from a yahoo group I wish I lived in LA right now...but he said some really good stuff for NSYNC so I think theyre definetly getting together woohoo haha! i know they were scheduled to and stuff but this just confirms it
[B][This @#%$ was OFF THE @#%$ HOOK!
Damn. I just. I don't even know where to begin really because the whole thing is all jumbled up in my head and I can't even believe I experienced it. The HOB exceeded all of my expectations. The set was 50 minutes long. Every song except Take It From Here was revamped, rearranged for the environment and all of it was rocked out. Justin Timberlake, garage band frontman LOL
I knew this was gonna be nuts when Justin moseyed out on stage wearing a Lite Beer t-shirt, a sagging pair of chinos on his non-existent ass and a Trucker's Cap on his head and then Trace followed him out carrying a Coke in one hand and a bottle of Jack Daniels in the other. Trace was on stage the whole show, either sitting on the side of the stage or standing up and watching Justin and in a way having him there completely set the tone for the whole show. 'Cause they're just some good ole boys!
Justin started with a short beatbox and then just launched into the middle of CMAR, completely rocking it with lewd pelvic thrusts, tongue pressed to his cheek in a simulated blowjob and many many flippings of the Bird. Oh...and there was a slight lyric change as well Cry Me a River, B!TCH!, Cry Me a River! @#%$ brilliant. It set the tone for the rest of the night.
I am not going to be able to report the song order accurately at all, I think. I can tell you what songs he did and I think they were more or less in the following order: CMAR, Senorita, Take It From Here, Like I Love You, then the Beatbox with the guy from Black Eyed Peas doing a freestyle on top of it and then RYB. I'm pretty certain that's right.
Justin played guitar for both Take It From Here and LILY and the arrangement on LILY was so different that initially I didn't even recognize it when they started playing the tune. I think he changed some of the lyrics as well. I really really hope someone did manage to sneak in some audio gear to this show because I desperately want MP3s from it. It was 180 degrees removed from the Arena show with many of the same songs, but the HOB set was very raw and the Arena show is polished to perfection.
As good as the beatbox at the Arena show is, the HOB Beatbox segment completely shot past it in execution and delivery. It was just Justin providing the beat for BEP guy (sorry, I don't know his name) to freestyle over and hearing Justin beatbox without the drum battle or DJ accompaniement just gave me a whole new appreciation for his level of skill at vocal percussion. And he clearly loves doing it and just generally making noises with his mouth because he did it a lot. Also, there was a segment between songs (I think maybe as an intro do LILY, but I'm not positive. Someone else might remember better) he just did this whole bit where he basically sang Do do do do do do while the band jammed. It was nonsense, but also thrilling and just fun. And all with hand movements while he did it.
For most of the set he did not dance, but towards the end of RYB he did some freestyle dancing and the whole crowd spontaneously started shouting "GO JUSTIN! GO JUSTIN!" and I think we were clapping along while he danced, but I can't remember. I know we were clapping along to the music at one point, but it's all a blur to me now. I need a time machine so I can go back and watch it all again.
Let's see...moments of note -- when Joey comes running out on stage and Lance comes sauntering out behind him with a drink in his hand (of course). Joey and Lance initially danced off to the side and then Joey started running around following Justin and repeatedly (and I mean REPEATEDLY) did the Wayne & Garth "I'm Not Worthy!" bowing thing. So adorable. And then the three of them were dancing around the microphone and Joey managed to knock into Lance's arm and Lance dropped his drink and the @#%$ look on Lance's face was like "OOPS! @#%$! My drink go bye bye!" and then he shot his straw out into the audience. Don't worry though. The boy got more booze from Trace.
I think at one point Joey and Justin and Lance were all pogoing up and down around the stage and then Justin heads back to the mike and Joey comes up and brings his arm up over the top of Justin's shoulder so his hand was resting across Justin's chest and pulls Justin against him and says (and this is paraphrasing) "I am so proud of this guy! He is an inspiration to me." And then Justin gave him a big hug and Lance came running over and threw his arms around both of them and YES, I cried LOL
After that Joey left the stage and Justin said "That right there is reason enough for another NSYNC record, don't you think?" (copied from coolwhipdiva because I couldn't remember the exact words) and then something about how they were going to "flip it" and I think he said something like "it won't be what you expect" or something like that. Lance stayed on stage until the end of the show. He was over in the corner with Trace doing the Lance dance and occasionally mouthing the words that Justin was singing. Those boys @#%$ LOVE him.
And I love him muchly. I love the arena show a lot and I've seen it once (so far) live and watched it twice already on DVD and listened to it countless times on CD. I love the arrangements in the arena show with everything all jazzed up and bluesy and old school R&Bish with the full band and horn section. It's a beautiful thing.
The HOB show was a beautiful thing of an entirely different sort. The sound was RAW. I think Justin finally achieved what he says he'd been looking to do on the album, creating a raw sound. There was just something special and unique about the rocked out arrangements and the influences that are so obvious on the album all took a backseat tonight. I think one of the very valid criticisms aimed at Justified is it's derivative. It wears its old school R&B influences a little too heavily and there's too little of Justin, a 22 year old Justin, on that album. He resolved that issue tonight and it was off the muthaf***ing chain, yo! CMAR as he usually performs it live is kind of big, ominous and sinister, here it was lowdown, mean and nasty -- a knife to the back with a quick twist of the blade and a humiliating public diss in front of all your best friends instead of a scary stalker vibe that makes you not want to walk through alleys and check the locks before you go to bed. I'm totally in love with the HOB version of it and I hope I get to hear it again.
He was definitely enjoying the freedom of playing to a 21+ crowd. And the crowd rocked. They loved him. They ate him up. That was one of the best audiences I've been a part of in a long time. I think the last time I was with a crowd with that much electricity in it was when I went to see The The play in Ahaheim about two years ago.
Justin himself had a whole different vibe to him at HOB. He really works the arena crowd in a masterful way in order to control the energy in the room and keep everyone flowing in the direction he wants you to go. He's so much the CULT LEADER in the arena. That's not the Justin who played at HOB. He was still something of a showman, but he wasn't manipulating the crowd. I'm not sure how to describe it exactly. Hmm. Let's say -- the Justin in the Arena really really wants you to like him and he's going to pull out every trick he knows to capture you. The Justin at HOB doesn't give a flying @#%$ whether you like him or not, but he's pretty confident that you will because he's having so much @#%$ fun that how can you help but get caught up in it? And you know what? @#%$ you if you don't 'cause he'll have a slamming time without you and you'll be the one who misses out. Da boy was having a grand time. Absolutely grand.
