WASHINGTON (AFP) - Labor Secretary Elaine Chao is to meet with Puerto Rican singer and UNICEF goodwill ambassador Ricky Martin to discuss child labor in Latin America and the Caribbean.
They are to meet Thursday.
Human rights experts say that millions of children in the region are victims of exploitation, including child pornography, sexual tourism, prostitution, trafficking in persons and as underage domestic labor.
The US Department of Labor, which organized the meeting, said Wednesday in a statement that it sponsors many projects in the region to counter the worst forms of child labor, such as child soldiers.
Ricky Martin, who earned worldwide fame with his song "Living la vida loca" during the 1998 World Cup of soccer, was named UNICEF goodwill ambassador a few weeks ago.
His job at UNICEF complements the work of the Ricky Martin Foundation, which recently launched a program to battle child pornography and prostitution worldwide.
