HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Police in four Pennsylvania counties, including Lancaster and Dauphin, are looking for a man who may be connected to a series of nine sexual assaults.
Investigators believe they are looking for the same man because of the similarities in the man's description and the manner of attack.
The assaults started in Lancaster County on the Conawago Trail in September of 2002. Another occurred there a year later in 2003. According to investigators, the attacks then moved west, where two women were assaulted in the greater Pittsburgh area.
Police said a knife or a gun was used, and many of the attacks occurred in secluded areas close to major highways.
"Victims of these crimes have been targeted in somewhat secluded areas," Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico said.
The Wildwood Nature Trail in Harrisburg is one of those secluded areas where an assault occurred in broad daylight in November. Since then, four more assaults have occurred, one in Susquehanna Township in January and three in the last week -- two in Dauphin County and an attempted assault in Cumberland County.
"We have a high degree of confidence that many of these are linked -- if not all," Marsico said.
Investigators have little or no clues on which to go. They can't pinpoint where he is from nor answer why the attacks are so spread out.
"There is no smoking gun that is looking at any one place or area," Marsico said.
Police said with the possibility of a serial rapist on the loose, women need to be more vigilant, especially at night.
"We do not want people to be afraid to go out and do the things they normally do. What we want you to do is be aware of your surroundings at all times," Trooper Kristal Turner-Childs said. Investigators said the best clue they have so far is a T-shirt worn in the second attack reading "Building Confidence."
Other than that, the attacker is described as a middle-aged white man with a physical build, weighing between 160 and 180 pounds.
