Shock Value on MTV Movie Awards

The inside scoop on this year’s MTV Movie Awards is that they were sensational at best, mostly relying on shock value antics as the connective tissue.

The first of many “sensationalâ€￾ moments came when 50 Cent, hip-hop’s man of the minute performed his “In Da Clubâ€￾ hit while securely strapped in a bulletproof vest. Gun range targets moved in and out of range as barely dressed dancers took aim and fired away to the beat. And though the fact that the rapper survived being shot nine times is a testament that miracles do happen, it’s rather sad the music network chose to glamorize the violent aspect of that fact. What about the 14-year-old in inner city, urban America who gets the message that surviving an attempted murder is par for the course of fame and fortune?

When Kirsten Dunst accepted her award for Best Kiss, her acceptance speech dissed fellow nominees Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck claiming their “Daredevilâ€￾ kiss was a bite from “Spider Man.â€￾

MTV decided to save the most disturbing part of the show for last as Russian girl duo t.A.T.u. performed their latest hit. The lesbian lovers/rockers were joined by at least 100 dancers in schoolgirl uniforms – many of whom appeared to be barely of age. They took over the stage and aisles of the auditorium dancing, screaming and stripping down to their boy’s briefs and wife beater t-shirts. At the song’s end, many of the girls engaged in kisses that signified much more than congratulations. The fact that the group was introduced by tween stars Hilary Duff and Amanda Bynes, while they held hands at the podium was disturbing to say the least – and not because of the action itself, but because of the sensational subtext Bynes, Duff and the network seemed to promote.

However, that’s not to say the show wasn’t without it’s highlights. Seann William Scott and Justin Timberlake were quite adequate in their roles as co-hosts. Pink’s performance was one of the real highlights of the night, for she showed the legions of screaming teenagers in the audience what it means to be a real rock star. And when Queen Latifah pulled an Oscar night Adrien Brody on the man himself when they presented an award together, the crowd applauded with approval. And last but not least, it was refreshing to see a fresh-from-rehab Jack Osborne, seated between sister Kelly and Paris Hilton in the show’s celebrity only seating section. He appears healthy and on the mend which we’re sure is great news for the Osbourne clan and the network.

The MTV Movie Awards don’t air until June 5, but something tells us all the editing in the world won’t make the pre-taped event anything but sensational – but that was probably the network’s goal anyway

There's some excellent points raised in this article.I do despair with the music industry's obsession with the sexualisation of young girls. It seems that as long as you're a pretty young thing, he shows enough flesh, you automatically have a record contract. this t.a..t.u thing is just dcraping the bottom of the barrel now. Nowt to do with them being lesbians - sexual preference is all part of freedom - but the fact they are so young and so provocative is just vulgar. Should really let the music speak for itself if it's good enough.
