April 23, 2003 - DMX chatted
with XXL magazine about his beef with Ja Rule and his ongoing trouble with
his record label, and surprisingly brought up the Backstreet Boys as musicians
in a similar predicament. Asked if he was jealous of Ja, X said, "I'd be
jealous of the Backstreet Boys when they sold more than me. The only reason
you think of jealous of you [Ja Rule] is because you know you sound like
me. That's common fu**ing sense, man. You think Backstreet Boys are jealous
of N'Sunk or whatever the fu** they name is? Fu** no - they have better
things to worry about." As for his label dissing him, X added, "Goin' back
to Backstreet. They made their label huge and brought them in sh**loads
of money and now they can't record, I heard, because their label is fu**ing
them around. I feel them. They're real mutha fu**as in their own way, but
their management 'team' refuses to recognize that sh**. I feel those men
or boys or whatever the fu** you wanna call them. We give our souls to
our music. We put our lives on the fu**ing wax and [the labels] treat us
like sh**."

"The Backstreet Boys, to 10 years of greatness. I remember the first time
I saw BSB. It was on MTV. I saw 5 guys rubbing themselves with their shirts
open, standing on some bleachers in the rain. My girlfriend was like “They’re
so hot.” “Who’s hot?” I said. She goes “the Backstreet Boys.” Even then
they were takin’ girls away from me. That was the ‘Quit Playing Games’
video. I truly became a fan when I went to see their ‘Millenium’ tour in
D.C. Now, I came their to get a bunch of girls phone numbers. But I left,
not only with the numbers, but a new appreciation for pop music. That night
I became a fan. And BSB has provided me and millions of people around the
world with great memories. I remember the Millenium special on MTV. Nobody
else came close. Thousand of fans outside. Over a million albums sold in
the 1st week. A new world record. It was the 90’s Beatle Mania. Everybody
knew their names, their songs, their favorite colors, and all that stuff.
But the music was what was irreplaceable. And the best was yet to come."

"When the Backstreet Boys were promoting Black & Blue, they did an
interview at Virgin Megastore. The interviewer asked them about the Smash
Hits party, the Black & Blue tour, Westlife versus the Spice Girls,
and more. More importantly, he asked them who they voted for in the 2000
U.S. Presidential election, seeing as how they're from Florida and Florida
was the controversial state as far as the voting was concerned. Brian got
out of answering the question. Nick and Howie said they would have voted
for Republican George W. Bush. Kevin and AJ were enthusiastic about saying
they were for Democrat Al Gore. Kevin then added "...because Bush is a
clown." Download the clips in the Files section of BackstreetDirt."

at the label's BMG home company said, "They are trying to strike a deal

at [Backstreet] if they should leave or be dropped by Jive Records. This
means they have the opportunity if presented to them to sign with RCA,
J, or Arista. The problem here is that none of these labels are interested
in Backstreet Boys because of all the legal baggage that could carry over."

writes "Greetings again!! I have again received permission to submit a
few thoughts from my friend in California regarding the latest Backstreet
move to put their album on hold! She does a wonderful job putting thoughts
into words, and I agree with her here! I feel that this latest move on
the part of Backstreet is all Jive Record's fault. Negotiations have turned
sour, and Backstreet, I feel, are doing the smart thing. All signs point
to this being the case, and I have a gut feeling. Afterall, we had reports
of all 5 of them logging studio hours, working, playing, getting back on
track, and suddenly it's all on hold! Read on for great thoughts
from a fellow fan."

"Joyce on the littrellfans.com message board said she met Brian Littrell
and Leighanne at an airport in Atlanta recently. She asked what was up
with the Backstreet Boys pushing the album back and Jive. He told her,
"We just had a meeting and it did not come out the way we were waiting.
There are still lots of stuff that we need to talk about. Like it's been
like one year that we didn't [have] a meeting, but I hope to get into the
studio soon. I am missing that." He also said he can't imagine people blaming
him for the CD not coming out, saying, "That's unfair. We are brothers
and I just can't imagine the five of us apart. We are definitely going
to release the next album soon. I hope to get into studio 'til the end
of May." Leighanne added, "I just can't stand him spending all night long
with Baylee on his lap, writing songs. And Baylee seems to love it, but
I cant sleep!" Read on for more."

"Brian's KY Love at the Backstreet Boys Mature Fan Club says, "Ok, so I
forgot I actually DO have a friend who is a friend of a celebrity. One
of my best friends was the personal assistant to Stevie Nicks several years
ago. Irving was her manager at the time, and she was in the middle of recording
an album. Apparently, her record company began trying to get creative control
over her music or something, and started hassling her on what she could
and could not put on her album. Irving told her to just stop recording
and wait til they fired her, which they did. She went to a new label and
finished her album. Irving has also done this with The Eagles (told them
not to record because the record company was giving them major problems)
and it worked with them too. There have been others that have done the
exact same thing under Irving's direction, and each time, it works. Irving
has earned the nickname "The Poison Dwarf" for a reason. He doesn't play
around when it comes to protecting his artists. I'm realllllly hoping that
this is an Irving-plan to get Jive out of the picture. If the guys are
doing the passive-aggressive thing to get out of their contract, I'd be
happy. And it's not like they can come out and SAY that's what they're
doing, either. Let's cross our fingers.""
