October 27, 2003 - Clyde
McKenzie of The Jamaica Observer writes, "The Caribbean has produced a
number of great artists including some who have been white. I make this
statement against the background of a letter sent to the editor from a
member of the Puerto Rican community who found my article in the Observer
of October 10, 2003, to be 'offensive.' The writer of the letter notes
that I classified Ricky Martin as one of the white artists who had become
a major seller of African inspired music and this he finds distasteful.
First, let me say that my categorization was not meant to be an indictment
of Mr. Martin; it was a mere statement of what I consider to be the facts."

Senator Larry Craig sang lead vocals for the Singing Senators - a group
of four republican senators who performed gospel and country songs at GOP
fundraisers and charity events before group member Sen. Jim Jeffords, (I)
Vermont bolted the party. But according to the latest issue of Newsweek
magazine, Craig's musical interests also include Ricky Martin. "I've got
all your records!," a breathless Craig told Martin. A spokesman for Craig
confirmed his boss ran into Martin in a Capital Hill hallway and like any
fan, made the most of it. "Often times there's different movie stars and
musicians around Capital Hill. It's not always that Larry gets to meet
them but this was a chance where he got to meet someone he's a fan of,"
Communications Director Will Hart told KBCI. Read more.

October 18, 2003 - Deborah
Panini-Hernandez, an associate anthropology professor teaching Latino studies
at Tufts University, tells USA Today Latin crossover idols such as Enrique
Iglesias and Jennifer Lopez can be unfairly judged. "There tends to be
a blurring of distinctions between Latinos who have been here for a long
time, who are bicultural and bilingual, and more recent immigrants," she
says. "Bicultural Latinos may choose to embrace Latin music, but they’ve
also grown up listening to hip-hop and R&B. Jennifer Lopez is someone
like that, so to accuse her of being a cultural turncoat is unfair." Leila
Cobo, Latin music editor at Billboard remarked, "The mainstream talks about
Latin music as if it began and ended with Ricky Martin." Read more.
