30, 2002 - AFP reports Mexican activists staged a rowdy protest in Los
Angeles on Friday against a new Hollywood film about Mexican artist Frida
Kahlo that they said perpetuated colonialism and racism. "Salma Hayek complained
when Madonna and Jennifer Lopez wanted to play Frida because they are not
real Mexicans, yet she did not hire any Mexicans for the top roles in the
film," protest leader Olin Teztatlipoca said.

Hayek admitted to the Houston Chronicle, "I'm going to be very honest with
you. I could have done this film [Frida] five years ago. The reason we
didn't get it made before was me."

Hayek smokes cigarettes much to the disapproval of her boyfriend, actor
Edward Norton. She tells Michael Prager of the Boston Globe got that directly
from the Frida Kahlo role. "One of the benefits of being a star is you
get to learn how to smoke for work," she said. "I used to be nauseous,
and Julie [Taymor, the film's director] used to say, 'it looks terrible.
It really looks like you don't know how.' So I would practice and practice,
until I got hooked."

was given no work at all. 'Being Mexican was considered so uncool,' she
